Colonels Retreat

Rajasthan & the North

Rating: Modest

Colonels Retreat overview

The owners of Colonels Retreat have created a true home from home, located in the quiet Defence Colony neighbourhood in southern Delhi. It is owned by Nandi, the eponymous colonel, and Meena Khanna, and managed by their older son and his wife and remains very much a family business.

Rooms are throughtfully furnished and decorated to provide comforts and mod cons such as TV, Wi-Fi, air conditioning, tea and coffee maker and en-suite bathroom with solar heated water. Rooms are arranged over several floors, each of which has a small lounge.

The guest house has a dining room, though most meals are served on the lovely rooftop terrace. Food is home cooked and of a very high standard. Meena is a talented cook and her skills have rubbed off on the kitchen staff. Food lovers will relish the chance to take part in one of the cooking lessons that are held on the premises. There are plenty of restaurants in the Defence Colony Market nearby.

There is a metro station a short walk from the guest house to help you get around the city and staff are happy to help you make sightseeing arrangements including organising taxis.

Open: Colonels Retreat is open all year.

Location: The guest house is in Defence Colony, a quiet residential suburb in the south of Delhi. Lajpat metro station about 300 metres away for access to other parts of the city.

Rooms: Rooms have comfortable beds, TV, complimentary Wi-Fi, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, storage space and a safe. All are air conditioned and en-suite with 24 hour hot and cold running water. Twin and double rooms are available.

Activities: Sightseeing, shopping in Defence Colony Market 500 metres from the guest house. Staff are happy to arrange a taxi for getting around. Cooking classes can be arranged at the guest house.

Facilities: There is dining room, a lounge on each floor and a roof terrace. Colonels Retreat offers a luggage storage service and a laundry service. There are water dispensers where you can fill your water bottle.

Dining: Breakfast is included in your stay and is often served on the roof terrace. Dinner can be provided, too, and there are cafes and restaurants in the neighbourhood. The banana bread is a speciality of the house!

Children: Children of all ages are welcome, although there are no specific facilities for youngsters.

Health: We recommend malaria prophylactics for travel to India.

Communication: There is Wi-Fi internet access in guest rooms.

Alex Burgess, Tribes

"A relaxed homestay with a family feeling atmosphere.  It has simple, clean, comfortable rooms and a delightful roof terrace.  It’s in a quiet, leafy residential area within walking distance of shops and restaurants."

Ms. Valerie Green
"Comfortable accommodation, a bit lacking in information, so on my first morning I had no idea where breakfast was and had to go online to find out something about the facilities available. "
Mrs. Jennifer Booth (03/01/2020)
"Initially I was somewhat disappointed with the hotel and I had got a very different impression from the reviews and summary of the hotel. The hotel was basic but it was very clean, had hot water and the service and food were very good. We were also able to use the room until 8pm which was excellent as our flight didn't leave until 2am the following morning. There was nothing to fault the hotel, I was just expecting something more in line with Shahpura House."
JPTH (04/02/2020)
"You may want to encourage them not to put your guests in rooms that give onto the communal area downstairs. That said, though I feared disturbance, none in fact happened. "
Ms. Penny Henley
"The only establishment where we didn't have to pay tax on our food and alcohol. Pleasant accommodation and nice location. Nice Staff. Good breakfast"
