Bundi Vilas

Rajasthan & the North

Rating: Modest

Bundi Vilas overview

Bundi Vilas is an intimate hotel with just 7 rooms, friendly service and an excellent setting against the walls of Bundi Garh Palace. This is a welcome change of pace from the hustle and bustle of India's larger cities and a chance to get off the beaten track and meet local people.

This heritage property is a 300 year old haveli, or private mansion, which has been wonderfully restored and opened to guests in 2008. It is entered though a 40 foot stone archway, leading to the elegant building. The 7 guest rooms retail many original features and are decorated and furnished in traditional style, while incorporating modern comforts such as air conditioning and ensuite bathrooms.

Meals are taken on the rooftop terrace, where guests enjoy large breakfasts and romantic dinners, against the backdrop of the palace - floodlit at night - town and Aravali Hills plus Jait Sagar lake below. Service is friendly, discreet and polite.

Bundi is an old walled town, dominated by the rambling palace. Guests can walk down from Bundi Vilas via a winding alleyway to the maze of streets that make up the old town. There are havelis, temples, bazaars and markets to be explored and the local people are friendly and welcoming to visitors.

Mrs. Lesley De Quartel
"The journey to the haveli already has you intrigued - the streets are narrow and full of life. After a short steep passageway the haveli rises impressively before you. Its elevated aspect affords you fantastic views over the city but most impressive is the view at the foot of the Bundi Garh Palace. As the day draws to an end, you can watch the monkeys by sunset return to claim the palace for themselves. As night draws in the castle is uplit and illuminates the thousands of bats tumbling out of the darkened windows - fabulous! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated - the water in the shower however didn't warm up very much. Our evening meal was served on the rooftop with an open fire to take away the chill. The food whilst tasty, in comparison to other meals we enjoyed on our tour of Rajasthan, was quite basic. Quirky place to stay, in a quirky city."

"It would have been helpful to know that this hotel was located up a narrow steep alleyway, accessible only by foot and that bedrooms were up several flights of stairs (no lift). Our arrival here was not as smooth as elsewhere and there was no local rep to greet us and sort out the formalities. Breakfast was later than elsewhere and didn't start till 8. This was inconvenient for us because we had a long journey ahead, but we were told it was impossible to arrange an earlier time. We were also taken unawares by their not accepting credit cards and we only had just enough cash to pay for our meals. That said, however, we had a lovely, if small, genuine heritage room, beautifully decorated and furnished, with an adequate bathroom and we enjoyed the good buffet dinner in the rooftop restaurant while admiring the staff's ingenious methods of deterring the fort's resident monkeys from joining us."

"Loved the fact was small and informal.good breakfasts. It was also the best restaurant to eat in town for food quality and roof top venue was fab."

"Placed in windowless room at first. After protest, got moved (but only because someone else had moved out, dissatisfied with their room; I found it fine)"
