Ajit Bhawan

Rajasthan & the North

Rating: Modest

Ajit Bhawan overview

Ajit Bhawan was built for Maharaja Ajit Singh, the younger brother of the maharajah of Jodhpur and is still owned and run as a Heritage Hotel by the same family. Built of red sandstone, this impressive1940’s structure has arched windows, carved balconies and cupolas adding to its rugged beauty.

Lying behind the palatial Ajit Bhawan is a charming village complex, with each room in a seperate cottage. Nestling in a rustic and lush green setting, the bungalows are named after the months and zodiac signs of the Indian calendar. Each cottage has been furnished in ethnic Rajasthani style and no two are the same.

Well-maintained lawns and thick shady trees make this village complex a haven for birds and humans alike. Other facilities available at the palace include a bar, large swimming pool and barbecue restaurant.

Open:  Ajit Bhawan is open all year.

Location:  The hotel is located near the Umaid Bhawan Palace, about 3kms from Jodhpur aireport and the railway station.

Rooms:  There are some 62 rooms and suites in several categories: royal suites, luxury suites, luxury rooms, luxury tents and executive rooms. All have modern comforts such as mini bar, tea and coffee maker, free W-Fi internet access, safe direct dial telephone and en-suite bathroom.  There is 24 hour room service.

Activities:  Staff can arrange trips into the desert and to local villages. They can also provide transport into and back from Jodhpur and arrange leisurely drives around to area in vintage cars.

Facilities:  These include a swimming pool, a spa, a gym and landscaped gardens. Services include a travel desk, money exchange, laundry and dry cleaning. There is a shopping arcade.  The hotel has a restaurant serving multi-cuisine dishes (Rajasthani, Indian and Continental) and a lounge bar.

Dining:  Meals are taken at individual tables in the restaurant, outside in the gardens or by the pool.

Children:  Children of all ages are welcome. There is a baby-sitting service.

Health:  We recommend malarial prophylactics for travel to India.

Communication:  There is free Wi-Fi internet access in guest rooms and in the public areas.

R Hughes

"Another great hotel, but sharing an outdoor area with 3 other rooms not fantastic unless all occupants of all villas are nite owls. Having said this, rooms were large, lovely and staff great. Terrific outdoor areas to relax after hectic days out. Hotel recommended eating down the road from the hotel at On the Rocks - great experience and good food. "

Mrs Karen Griffiths
"Wonderful well-maintained gardens and buildings, friendly and attentive staff. We had a spectacular room with a vast modern bathroom complete with jacuzzi bath. Food was good, a group of traditional dancers and musicians performed on one of the lawns in the evening and we were sorry it was only a one-night stay."
Ms. Penny Henley
"Excellent accommodation and the grounds were fantastic. Wonderful choice of food for breakfast for the Westerners."
