Nagaland

One of the Seven Sisters states in north-east India, Nagaland is one of the country’s smallest and most remote states. Myanmar lies on its eastern border. Sixteen tribes inhabit the state and it is this tribal diversity which fascinates travellers, especially since one of the common practices here used to be head-hunting! While head-hunting was banned in the 19th century, it actually continued until relatively recently, and there exist today a few elderly men from the Konyak tribe who have the tattoos which were conferred on a successful headhunter.
Read more about this fasciniating state:

  • The famous Hornbill Festival has been a showcase of the tribes of Nagaland since 2000, with music, dance, dress, weaving, carving and other arts, food …  The week-long festival attracts both Indian and international visitors, and takes place between about 1-10 December in Kisama.
  • There are other tribal festivals throughout the year, mostly associated with agriculture, though it also celebrates all the Christian festivities too as it is a mostly Christian (particularly Baptist) state.
  • Nagaland is home to 396 species of orchids.
