One of the Seven Sisters states in north-east India, Nagaland is one of the country’s smallest and most remote states. Myanmar lies on its eastern border. Sixteen tribes inhabit the state and it is this tribal diversity which fascinates travellers, especially since one of the common practices here used to be head-hunting! While head-hunting was banned in the 19th century, it actually continued until relatively recently, and there exist today a few elderly men from the Konyak tribe who have the tattoos which were conferred on a successful headhunter.
