Thanjavur

Why visit Thanjavur?”‹

Also known as Tanjore, Thanjavur is a city closely connected with the Chola dynasty who made it their capital in 850AD and remained in power till the 14th century. Today their influence can be seen in the magnificent temples which are now UNESCO World Heritage Monuments.
Reasons to visit Thanjavur include:

  • The 11th century Brihadeeswara Temple with its 60m gopuram topped with an 80-tonne granite block, and fresco-decorated inner chambers
  • The archaeological museum with its varied exhibits and information about the temple’s restoration
  • Thanjavur Palace’s Saraswathi Maha library with over 30,000 manuscripts and the Raja Raja Museum and its fine collection of Chola bronze sculptures
  • See examples of Thanjavur painting with its bright colours, inlaid glass beads and semi-precious stones and gleaming gold coating, depicting Hindu gods and goddesses

When to visit

Thanjavur is best visited in the winter months (December to February), though the monsoon (June to September) can also be a good time with the light rains providing relief from the heat. The summer months (March to May) might prove too hot for some visitors.

Accommodation in Thanjavur

You can stay in a restored mansion in the centre of town, and immerse yourself in local culture through musical performances, cookery classes, dancing displays and chanting.
