Why visit Pondicherry?”‹

Pondicherry, also referred to as Puducherry and ”˜Pondy’, is an attractive coastal town with an interesting cultural heritage resulting from the many nationalities who have lived here over the centuries. The gracious French Quarter is especially appealing and is in stark contrast to the bustling Tamil Muslim Quarter.
Reasons to visit Pondicherry include:

  • Explore the wide tree-lined boulevards and elegant colonial buildings of the French Quarter, a marked contrast to other Indian towns
  • Take a ride on a traditional cycle rickshaw
  • Walk to the Tamil Quarter to visit the bustling fish market and busy streets.
  • Stroll along the seafront promenade with the locals.
  • Seek solace at Sri Aurobindo Ashram through yoga and meditation
  • Visit the ”˜International City of Unity’, Auroville, with its distinctive philosophy and communal life, and see the golden dome of the Matrimandir

When to visit

Pondicherry can be visited year-round though in the summer (March ”“ June) the daytime temperature can be over 30°C. The monsoon occurs from July to September but rainfall is in showers rather than continuous. The winter (October - February) is pleasantly cool.

Accommodation in Pondicherry

Stay in the French Quarter and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere of this part of town, ideal for relaxing after sightseeing.
