Casa Gangotena

Quito & the Northern Andes

Rating: Ultimate

Casa Gangotena overview

Situated in a newly restored historic mansion overlooking the Plaza San Francisco, the Casa Gangotena sets a new standard for style and elegance in the colonial old town of Quito. The 31 rooms have been beautifully restored using traditional craftsmanship, incorporating modern technology and styling with a light and airy feel. The hotel's impeccable standards of accommodation and service have contributed to it becoming a member of the renowned Relais & Chateaux association.

The service is friendly and efficient, and the hotel has several areas where you can relax including a restaurant, glass-ceilinged patio and garden. The rooftop terrace, exclusive to hotel guests, offers one of the best views of the city looking out over the church and convent of San Francisco in one direction and the Virgin of Quito on top of El Panecilo hill in the other.

The present mansion was built in the 1920s, after the previous building burnt down. It was the home of the wealthy Gangotena family. However, by the end of the century, the house had fallen into disrepair and it took several years of hard work to turn the building into one of Quito’s best hotels. Elements from the original house have been painstakingly restored and incorporated into the design alongside new materials and furnishings made to match the history of the house.

"A beautiful hotel, I was surprised by the continuous police prescence 'guarding' the entrance."
Susanna S. (29/01/2020)
"The Casa Gangotena is an oasis in Quito. The majestic buildings have been wonderfully renovated. The rooms have high ceilings and large bathrooms. There is a stylish atrium at the heart of the hotel. The hotel is situated in the heart of "old" Quito on San Francisco square. Grateful thanks to Alphonso the manager for his warm and gracious welcome. A highlight for us was our tour of the monastery and church on the square. Alphonso accompanied us while we were taken round by a young monk named funnily enough Franscisco! We took the easy option of joining the hop on/hop off bus to get an overview of old and modern Quito. Like any large city one has to be mindful of where you go, but it was a fascinating experience. "
