Shawandha Lodge overview
Shawandha Lodge is on the unspoilt south Caribbean coast, a short walk from Playa Chiquita beach. It is just a 4-hour drive from San Jose and a few kilometres from the little town of Puerto Viejo de Limon. Accommodation is in self-contained bungalows set in the 5 acres of lush tropical gardens. Built of wood, bamboo and thatch, they blend harmoniously with their surroundings and provide comfortable lodgings. Each has a private veranda, where you laze in a hammock or sit and enjoy watching Congo monkeys and toucans in the gardens.
The restaurant, set beneath a high thatched roof, serves a breakfast of fresh fruit, home-baked bread and cooked eggs every morning. At dinner time you'll be served tempting French-inspired dishes complemented by a glass of wine.
The lodge is well positioned for visits to Cahuita National Park, where you can go snorkelling, take boat rides and hikes. You can explore the coast by kayak, visit a sloth sanctuary, go bird watching, white water rafting and zip lining plus many other activities, which can all be arranged at the lodge. You can also take time to enjoy the gardens and go for swims in the pool or the reef-protected ocean waters.

"Our first real taste of Costa Rica and we were made very welcome here. The French owner takes time to talk to her guests and the food is absolutely first rate. Wonderful fish and the fruits are amazing. The grounds are lovely and the bungalows are comfortable. There is also a pool to cool off in and to relax by."

"Appallingly offhand initial greeting redeemed somewhat by the character and peace of the lodge. Overall rating is probably good, but ruined by the arrival.
In addition, Casita lighting was far too dim - we wished we had brought head torches!"

"3 nights here. This was our first introduction to rainforest territory! Our greeting was the Howler Monkeys which were a pleasure. The Owner was around and took the time to meet and greet. Lovely cabin with plenty of room and a super hammock to chill out on. Really imaginative hotel and surroundings and so natural too. Breakfast was a little repetitive.
It was from here that we went to see the BriBri tribe."

"The rooms are quite basic and minimalist, but exceptionally clean. All the food was excellent, the staff were all very friendly, helpful and professional. We enjoyed the location. The pool wasn't that appealing, mainly as it was fairly close to a noisy road. We liked the layout and the proximity to the beach and the town of Peurto Viejo."

"This was a real gem. We were uniquely situated within individual bungalows nestled within the Rain Forest surrounded most of the time by really loud Howler Monkeys. We loved the hammocks on the verandas and the swimming pool surrounded by the most amazing array of exoctic plants, it was like swimming in the palm house at Kew Gardens. The food in the restaurant was very good - I can definately recommend the steak - and the breakfasts, fresh fruit followed by eggs were the freshest we had all holiday. The pineapple was the best we tasted in Costa Rica. There's a short walk to the beach and a wonderful stroll along the beach to Punta Uva, worth checking out the Eden Beach restaurant. There is also an ancient Ceiba tree in the grounds. "
