Mawamba Lodge

Rating: Modest

Mawamba Lodge overview

Nestled between the Tortuguero Canals and the Caribbean Sea, lies Mawamba Lodge. The lodge is surrounded by lush, verdant rainforest and is the essence of Caribbean beauty and hospitality. The only access to the hotel is by boat or by air which gives it a remote feel.

The 54 standard rooms are spread along the property gardens, accessed by winding pathways. The rooms are simple yet comfortable. The furniture is cane and splashes of colourful photography adorn the wood-panelled walls. A ceiling fan circulates the air and helps keep things cool. There are also 4 superior rooms offering a more private experience in spacious rooms with a king size bed. The large bathroom has both a hot tub and shower.

The pool, bar and restaurant area is surrounded by unique vegetation, home to various wildlife, including the red eyed tree frog that will serenade you through dinner. Costa Rican and international style meals are served buffet style in the restaurant.

Discover the area by boat tour, or kayak tour. Night walks are an opportunity to discover the different sounds of the rainforest as the nocturnal species come to life. The beach to the front of the lodge is easily accessed and provides refreshing ocean breezes and the opportunity for a quiet stroll along the beach that may lead to sighting the rush of the turtle hatch-lings on their way to the ocean (September to November). Or you could relax in one of the many hammocks strategically positioned in the grounds and soak up nature and sunshine in peace and quiet. One unique tour that is available here is on board the Katonga floating restaurant, this provides a very different setting for dinner as you eat whilst cruising along the Tortuguero Canals.

Each room has a veranda with a seating area looking out onto the gardens. The deluxe rooms are larger with an indoor seating area in addition to the veranda area and also the addition of a bath in the en-suite.

Activities Take motor boat rides, go kayaking and enjoy guided nature walks in Tortuguero National Park whilst looking out for monkeys, lizards, otters, turtles, caiman and birds, follow the nature trail in the lodge's grounds. From July to October you may see nesting green turtles, with evening walking tours to watch them on the beach. Enjoy a unique dining experience on the Katonga floating restaurant.

Mr. Christopher Ellsum

"We loved our stay here. Although the cabin was rustic it met our needs adequately and the setting was perfect. Set in beautiful gardens and fronting onto the waters edge it is home to so many birds and animals. Each morning we were woken early to the dawn chorus of the most amazing bird song especially from the Montezuma Oropendola. The organised trips were superb as well as the extra ones we did. The resort was beautifully laid out and the food and service were very good."

Mrs. Joanna Hoggard
"A good destination and a lot of wild life to see from the rivers. A very large 'hotel' and managed trips and food well, although the latter was somewhat basic. The bar was poorly manned, often having to go to reception to get the barman! Well, twice!!!"
Mrs Claire Race
"The location is amazing between the sea and river, lovely gardens with frog and butterfly houses. The rooms are a bit basic but comfortable, but we had not hot water, not even warm so when we had got wet in a downpour it wasn’t pleasant. Apparently nobody had any hot water! "
Mrs. Kathryn Taylor
"The environment necessitates a certain basicness about the accommodation which we accept. I think all the Lodges were perhaps similar. Mawamba has the advantage of being situated so you can walk on the beach and to the village. Our cabin was clean. Running water was cold but in the heat this didn't matter. The only thing we didn't like much was the communal eating. Food average. The rainforest and hotel staff and guides were excellent and made up for the slight niggles "
Lynn A
"Arrive by boat ! Great buffet style meals with good selection. Basic room. Massive gardens with lots of different areas, could always find a quiet area around pool on beach or hammocks on dock! There are large Iguana wandering around! We did the garden tour with the guide very good defiantly recommend very informative. Butterfly and frog enclosures. Quite a large lodge, put onto shared table for all meals , which worked out fine for us."
