Lomas del Volcan

Northern Costa Rica

Rating: Modest

Lomas del Volcan overview

With 47 cabins dotted around the gardens, Lomas del Volcan has a quaint and relaxing atmosphere. Making the most of the views, and they are spectacular, each cabin has two verandas, one on each side, so depending on the time of day, or your mood, you can change the view simply by moving to the other veranda. All rooms have either king or queen size beds and huge windows to maximise the views. The cabins are warm and cosy, each comes with minibar, coffee maker, safe, ceiling fan, air conditioning, TV, telephone and an en-suite bathroom.  Built of wood, there are accents of bright colours in the soft furnishings and pictures that adorn the walls and the windows highlight the lush green surroundings.

Wander down the pathways to the main area. It's easy to relax here by the pool or Jacuzzi, bordered with lush green gardens and overlooked by the towering Arenal volcano. The restaurant serves scrumptious breakfasts there's always plenty of local fresh fruit on offer and also the traditional Costa Rican breakfast, "gallo pinto" or you could opt for the buffet. Lunch and dinner are also served here but if you fancy something different, La Fortuna town, with more restaurants, is only 10 minutes away, so you could try some authentic eateries in town. El Volcan bar, on site serves beer, South American wines and also delicious cocktails; enjoy them while taking in the beautiful views of the volcano which dominate the skyline.

From the moment you arrive you will feel part of the nature that surrounds you. There is a 1.5km walking trail on the property where you can discover birds and wildlife at your own pace. The vegetation in this area is so lush, green and inviting. It compels you to sit and take in the sights and sounds that surround you. There are plenty of other activities on offer in the area that are not to be missed. You can get your adrenaline pumping while zip-lining or abseiling down a waterfall. Take advantage of guided excursions to Arenal Volcano National Park and visit the hanging bridges or take a dip in the healing hot springs. White water rafting and horse riding are other ways of seeing the sights. You are close enough to be able to visit Cano Negro National Park from here too. With so much to do you definitely won't be bored.

Mrs. Nicola Tallett

"Lovely location and cabins.... HOWEVER, their appproach to service from reception to the restaurant was not up to scratch. We arrived at 2pm to find only 2 cabins available- one next to the pool generator, and one next to reception. Neither with volcano views. We asked to move and they said “maybe tomorrow”. The local rep sorted and we moved for definite the next day to one of the best cabins. This same ‘don’t care’ attitude was everywhere. This really undermined a quality location and infrastructure. "

Ms. Lorna Pearson
"We loved this place. It didn't even matter that it rained for hours on end as it is such a beautiful location and watching the tremendous storm from the veranda was a highlight The pool area was lovely and the breakfast healthy and plentiful. "
Mrs. Andrea Dawson
"Loved this - beautiful views when cloud rose. Not far from town and hotel has in-house taxi for visiting restaurants in town - 5-10 minute drive away. Needs to be paid for but very convenient. Staff very nice and lovely restaurant and bar. Humming birds in the garden. Lovely rooms. very private."
Frances and Ian Clarke
"Our favourite hotel, beautiful room with a view to the volcano. The food was excellent, the nature walk at the back was lovely - we saw a family of coatis. The staff were very friendly and the pool area was nice - although we stuck to the warm jacuzzi as pool itself was freezing!"
"Such a beautiful setting. The views of the volcano as a backdrop to the hotel gardens whilst having breakfast is wonderful. Views from your bungalow were equally amazing. All the staff here were very good and reception staff were outstanding. "
