Hotel Belmar

Northern Costa Rica

Rating: Mid-range

Hotel Belmar overview

Staying at Hotel Belmar you'll be in the midst of several acres of lush cloud forest with a fast-flowing stream and cascading waterfall. This family owned and run hotel has a long tradition of hospitality having been welcoming guests for some thirty years.

The hotel is made up of two main chalets, both built in the style of an Alpine ski lodge, a reflection of the time the owners spent in Austria before returning to Costa Rica. They are set in beautiful landscaped gardens, with a large duck pond and sun deck. There's a self-guided walking trail that leads into the forest, giving you the chance to explore at your leisure. If you feel the need for some pampering, spa staff are on hand to administer your choice of treatment. Yoga classes are available most days and will leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Sitting on the terrace eating breakfast is the perfect way to begin your day, sampling fresh fruits, freshly baked bread, home-made jams and yogurts plus more hearty egg-based dishes as you watch birds among the trees. Lunch and dinner also make use of local ingredients, many grown in the hotel's own vegetable and herb gardens.

Guest rooms in the main building are spacious, with polished wooden floors, hand-made furniture, balconies and private bathrooms stocked with organic toiletries. The floor-to-ceiling windows and private balcony look out over the forest with views of the Nicoya Peninsula in the distance. The decor is warm and finished off with local artworks. You'll have WiFi and a mug of freshly brewed local coffee is just a phone call away. Other rooms are in the separate chalet and have their own lounge and Jacuzzi with fabulous views.

"What a gem. Rooms are basic - well, ours was! No AC but a fan, insect screen and a breeze kept us nice and comfortable. They actually do "farm to table"; the herb teas and homemade yoghurt are amazing. They have their own micro-brewery producing 3 fine ales and a stout. The gardens are are amazing as is the secret valley. Probably our favourite stop."

Mrs. Joanna Hoggard
"Beautiful location, good service and nice rooms. Highly recommended. Excellent wildlife in the gardens."
Mr. Neil Symmonds (12/11/2019)
"This is a beautiful hotel to stay, the views from the dining balcony are exceptional. We had a peninsula room ( main block) which was very comfortable with it's own small balcony area. The dining was quite formal, the food was slightly disappointing and we found the waiting and bar service to be slow and less friendly than elsewhere. Taxis into Santa Elena are easy and cheap, and there are a few bars and restaurants there to use- most being quite OK. The gardens at the Belmar are worth having a wander around as you can spot quite a bit of wildlife, not visible from the hotel. We didn't get around to using the sauna- but it looked very inviting."
"This was a lovely small hotel. The views from our room and restaurant were beautiful! The food here was excellent. It was all so fresh and mainly supplied from their own farm. The staff were very friendly. There was an enjoyable trail next to the lodge and a pond to sit and relax near. A great place to stay. "
Mr. David Redwood (06/02/2020)
"Enjoyed our stay here particularly as had good sightings of the resplendent quetzal in Curicancho Park, but had a very boring local guide. On our second visit on our own we enjoyed it much more. Good food, and nice room."
