Eden Project Photo Competition 2016 Prize

Tribes is delighted to be offering the prize for the Eden Project’s 2016 photographic competition.
Visit the Eden Project, including the incredible Rainforest Biome, from 27 May to 30 September, take a winning photo, and you’ll find yourself in the real rainforest!

This exciting rainforest holiday will take you to two main rainforest areas.  You can explore Tortuguero on the Caribbean side of the country, and then head south for 3 nights at Golfo Dulce on the Pacific side.  In addition you will have one night in San Jose on the day you arrive, and a night at a boutique lodge near a cloudforest.

During this week you will see a wonderful range of wildlife from stunning birdlife (hummingbirds, quetzals, toucans), to the country’s famous colourful frogs and other amphibians and reptiles, and some fascinating mammals (from slow sloths to spider monkeys, agoutis, coatis, peccaries, ocelots, deer, kinkajous ...).

We have chosen some lovely places for you to stay too, so at the times you’re not exploring rainforest you can relax by the pool, or by the beach at Golfo Dulce.

The competition is open to people aged 18 and over. UK residents only. Normal exclusions. Competition open from 27 May to 30 September 2016. See full entry instructions and terms and conditions: http://www.edenproject.com/edenphotocomp

San Jose - pool

Day 1 - San Jose

You set off on your flight to Costa Rica.  You will arrive at San Jose, the capital, where you will be taken to your hotel for the night.

Boat trip

Day 2 - Tortuguero

Time to explore Costa Rica!  This morning you will be collected for a roughly 2-hour journey by road, then you take an exciting motor riverboat trip for about 1½ hours to get to Tortuguero on the northern Caribbean coastline.   Tortuguero National Park is an isolated flooded forest and network of islands.  This unique area offers a wildlife rich experience different to any other in Costa Rica.  After lunch at your lodge, we’ll take you on a visit of the village.  The people here are strongly behind conservation, especially of the turtles for which the area is particularly famous.

Day 3 - Tortuguero

After breakfast we’ll take you on a rainforest hike.  It’s great to get a feeling of being in the midst of the rainforest, and spotting the wildlife you find here.  You can hope to see caiman, otters, maybe even a manatee.  Two-toed and three-toed sloths are both found here, as well as monkeys, iguanas, and Basilisk lizards.  Birdlife such as toucans, green macaws and a host of water birds are also commonly sighted.  The turtles’ nesting season here is March to October. Leatherbacks, loggerheads, hawksbills and green turtles can all be found here.

Golfo Dulce beach

Day 4 - Golfo Dulce coast

Today you’ll go back to San Jose in time for a flight south to the Golfo Dulce, by the Osa Peninsula.  Your luxury beachfront rainforest lodge in the Piedras Blancas National Park is remote, and only accessible by boat, so it’s another exciting journey.  The park is home to over 350 species of birds (many endemic), 750 species of trees, 140 species of mammals, 115 of reptiles and almost 10,000 species of insects.

Playa Cativo cabin

Day 5 - 6 Playa Cativo, Golfo Dulce

You have two full days here to enjoy the excellent bird and wildlife viewing surrounding you.  The food at Playa Cativo is renowned organic farm-to-table cuisine. All 9 rooms have an ocean view, there is a pool, yoga deck, you can go paddle-boarding, kayaking, swimming, hiking in the rainforest.  This is a truly gorgeous place to escape to for a few days soaking up the flora and fauna of the rainforest. You see monkeys (they have howlers, capuchins, spider monkeys and squirrel monkeys) coatis, deer, kinkajous, peccaries, sloths, jaguars, ocelots, pumas, and in the sea there are dolphins, whale sharks, rays, and even whales in season.

Day 7 - Chayote Lodge, north of San Jose

Today you’ll fly back to San Jose and we’ll transfer you to the lovely boutique lodge called Chayote Lodge which is nearby some lovely cloudforest.  You have the rest of the day to enjoy the wonderful views over volcanoes and coffee plantations, and taking walks through the nearby cloudforest.

How this holiday helps

The Eden Project in Cornwall is an educational charity, connecting people with each other and the living world.  They constantly explore how we can work towards a better future, and back transformational projects and learning programmes.  Their famous visitor centre is in a huge crater in Cornwall, UK, where vast Biomes house the largest rainforest in captivity with stunning plants.

Tribes Travel is an award-winning sustainable travel company, so it made sense for Eden to work with Tribes to offer an environmentally-friendly rainforest holiday as this year’s prize for the photo competition.  Tribes offers mostly tailor made nature, wildlife and cultural holidays in Africa, Latin America and India. They also plant thousands of indigenous trees each year, currently in deforested areas of Malawi, to offset their travellers’ flight carbon emissions.

The Costa Rica holiday itself visits two rainforest regions – Tortuguero on the Caribbean and Piedras Blancas National Park on the Golfo Dulce in the south Pacific coast.  Here you will be able to see true rainforest for real – enjoy the flora, spot the wildlife and incredible array of birds.  Costa Rica is known for its efforts in conservation and sustainability, and is one of the world’s top ecotourism destinations.

The lodge you will be staying at in Tortuguero is Rainforest Alliance certified for its environmental sustainability.  Playa Cativo, the lodge at Golfo Dulce is 100% powered by hydroelectricity and solar power, and has an organic farm, as well as using the most environmentally friendly products it can get.
