Cariblue overview

Guest staying at Cariblue Beach and Jungle Resort have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the Costa Rican culture of 'Pura Vida'. This attractive beachfront property gives you the best of both worlds, not only does it have the beach and ocean, there is also 2 hectares of rainforest for you to explore.

When you are not relaxing on the beach, or seeking out wildlife in the forest, you may want to spend a little time mingling with other guests. The main area, where you'll find the reception, bar and restaurant is house under a huge palm roof, open sides allow the breezes to flow freely.  With 2 swimming pools, 2 jacuzzis and a health spa, all your pampering needs are taken care of, take things slow and enjoy the moment.

There are a variety of rooms at Cariblue, but our favourite are the bungalows and this is where we accommodate our guests. They are found in the most secluded part of the resort, surrounded by well-established trees. They are perfect for couples and families alike. The bungalows are built from wood and have been attractively finished and furnished. You'll find a hammock perfectly positioned on the porch where you can spend a little time with a book, or simply close your eyes and listen to the sounds of the forest.

As well as enjoying the relaxed pace of life here, you can also enjoy snorkelling the coral reefs and also hiking in Cahuita National Park. Craft tours to Sarchi can be arranged. Birding is a popular pasttime with more than 120 species recorded in the hotel gardens alone. You may also spot sloths, monkeys and some of the smaller inhabitants such as frogs and butterflies.

Open: Cariblue Beach and Jungle Resort is open all year.

Location: The hotel is situated on the beachfront at Playa Cocles on the Caribbean coast, 3kms from the town of Puerto Viejo. The hotel is about a 4-hour drive from San Jose.

Rooms: There are 44 rooms and suites spread across several categories: standard, superior, deluxe, ocean beachfront, bungalows, jungle family house, junior suite and a beachfront apartment. Our favourite are the bungalows and this is where we house our guests at Cariblue. Amenities include air-conditioning, free WiFi, cable TV, safe, hair dryer and ceiling fan. The private veranda has a hammock and chairs.

Activities: There's plenty to do at Cariblue, excursions to local parks and reserves in search of wildlife, taking canopy tours, visiting villages and spending time at the sloth sanctuary. Nearer to home you can stroll along Cocles beach, wander in the hotel's lush gardens or explore the local area. Cahuita National Park is a big draw card here, you can go snorkelling on the coral reefs, or hike in the reserve if you wish.

Facilities: The Soleluna Restaurant specialises in original Caribbean cuisine and there are regular themed nights with live music.  If you're looking for a lighter bite, the adjoining bar serves Italian style dishes along with a range of soft and alcoholic drinks including cocktails. There are 2 swimming pools and 2 Jacuzzis. The spa offers pampering and therapeutic treatments.

Dining: Meals are eaten at separate tables.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome.

Health: Costa Rica is a low to no risk malaria area.

Communication: There is free WiFi in guest rooms.

Frances and Ian Clarke

"Lovely room which blended in with the natural environment. We were woken early each morning by the howler monkeys and there were agoutis, frogs and lots of different birds within feet of our lodge. A short walk down the drive takes you to the beautiful caribbean sea."

"The caribbean area seems very laid back with numerous backpackers so this hotel was probably the one most suited to us in that area. Bungalow accommodation was very good, clean and private. The gardens were nice attracting birds and colourful frogs. The restaurant staff were good and the food was good, however the reception staff were poor and seemed indifferent in their manner."
Mrs. Liz Moore
"When we arrived here we all looked at each other and said this will do very nicely. We fell asleep to the sound of the waves from the sea. It certainly set the bar very high for the remainder of the trip. Sorted out a little problem with the rooms very quickly and efficiently - no drama."
"We loved this accommodation. The wildlife we saw at the complex was amazing, sloths, toucans, hummingbirds to name a few. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Our cabin was clean and well presented. The main restaurant was closed but the one at the front of the properly provided a limited menu with basic food. "
Mr. Bill Stiles
"You had to pay 2US dollars to top up your water bottle and pool towels were not provided but you were expected to buy one for 6US dollars . Drinks overpriced especially the wine. Puerto Vecho is lively at night. Nemo Restarant particularly good. Weather very wet on this coast"
