You leave the capital behind as you drive north by Braulio Carrillo National Park, stopping en-route for breakfast and local coffee. At the river dock of Cano Blanco you board a boat to cruise for about 2½ hours along the river and canals to Tortuguero National Park. Keep your eyes open for movement on the banks and in the water, indicating the presence of monkeys, birds and crocodiles. You arrive at the lodge in time for lunch, after which you head into Tortuguero village (by boat) to learn something of the lifestyle of the local residents, and also about the turtle conservation efforts going on here. You return to the lodge for dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
Today you explore Tortuguero National Park. Activities depend on the weather, but perhaps after breakfast you can follow a guide on a hike along easy pathways on forest trails, stopping to examine different plants and to watch the wildlife. If you're travelling between July and September you have the chance to visit the beach at night to see the green turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
You have breakfast at the lodge before beginning the journey south to Rios Tropicales Lodge, enjoying lunch en-route. Having had breakfast you are ready for your next adventure, as you take to the water for some white water rafting. The thermal hot springs offer a chance for a healthy soak, just the ticket to ease your muscles after the walk. Breakfast, dinner
Leaving Arenal behind you are transferred to Rio Perdido Lodge, a journry of around 2 hours 45 minutes. Rio Perdido is quite a sight, dramatically perched above two converging rivers.
