Awasi Atacama

Northern Chile

Rating: Ultimate

Awasi Atacama overview

Awasi Atacama is an exclusive hotel providing private guided excursions to allow guests to explore the Atacama Desert as and when they wish. Great care has been taken in the design and construction of the lodge, which has attractive open air social areas where you can rest between trips.

Rooms and suites are made from traditional local materials such as adobe, wood, stone and thatch, keeping interiors cool during the day and warm in chilly evenings and mornings. As well as an en-suite bathroom, you have an indoor sitting area and a terrace where you can relax. The rustic style is complimented by rich fabric throws and cushions.

You have your own guide for the duration of your stay, and together you plan how you spend your time. There's a choice of half day and full day trips, and a wide range of activities to choose between including walks, treks, bike, horse and 4x4 rides in the desert as you explore geysers, valleys, canyons, salt flats, lagoons, archaeological sites and villages, see flamingos, foxes, wild donkeys and vicunas. All activities are tailored to your wishes and fitness levels.

You are welcome to spend as much time at the lodge as you like, making yourself at home (awasi means home) as you relax by the pool and chat to other guests in the open air lounge. Meal times are a highlight, as you enjoy the exquisite cuisine created by the chef and his team using local ingredients, and meals can be adapted to your own needs. This personal approach is key to the Awasi experience, and is evident throughout your stay.

Given the quality of the accommodation, excursions and service it comes as no surprise that Awasi is a member of Relais & Chateaux.

Open: Awasi Atacama is open all year. It first opened in 2007.

Location: Awasi is on Calle Tocopilla, within walking distance of the main square in San Pedro de Atacama. The site is divided by a small street. The town is 2,450 metres above sea level. The closest airport is Calama, about 100kms and a 90 minute drive away.

Rooms: There are 10 guest cottages, each at least 50sqm in area. These include round rooms, round suites and the largest rectangular suites. There is one room that adjoins a round suite which can be booked together. All have a bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe, an en-suite bathroom with a shower, additional outdoor shower, sun room and a private patio. Suites also have a desk and a chaise long or armchair. They are constructed of adobe, stone and wood, along the line of traditional buildings. The 3 rectangular suites are located on the side of the road away from the communal areas, round rooms and round suites.

Activities: Each room has its own guide and 4x4 vehicle for excursions, and guests liaise with their guide to devise their own itinerary, including full day trips and half day excursions, day by day. Activities offered include horse riding, walks, treks, bike rides, visits to archaeological sites, salt flats, desert valleys, star gazing and cookery classes.

Facilities: These include a restaurant, lounge, bar, outdoor swimming pool and deck with loungers and daybeds.

Dining: Meals are based on traditional local cuisine, celebrating the ingredients of the desert. All meals and drinks are included in your stay.

Children: Children aged 10 years and over are welcome. An extra bed can be provided in rectangular suites on request, for a child. The adjoining round room and round suite make good family accommodation.

Health: Be aware of the effects of altitude when visiting here.

Communication: There is wifi internet access in the main lodge, though this can be rather slow. Mobile phone signals are unreliable. There is a satellite phone for emergency use.

Notes: Awasi Atacama is a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux collection.
