Hpa-An, also called Pa-An, is a small city in the south of Burma and is the capital of Kayin State. It’s not far from the border with Thailand and is a charming place, which only a few travellers reach. It’s a nice stop when travelling between Yangon and Mawlamyine.
The town is surrounded by beautiful countryside. A visit to the nearby Saddar Cave is a must. Its entrance is guarded by two giant white stone elephants and the cave is filled with stalactites and numerous Buddha images and shrines (as well as bats). Make sure you bring a good head torch. As you walk through the cave you are rewarded with a spectacular view of a lake on the other side.
A visit to Kyauk Kalap monastery is also worthwhile. Known as the Chocolate monastery because of the local pronunciation of it “Chalk-Chalap”, it sits in the middle of a small reservoir and is most unusual as the golden pagoda sits on top of a sheer rock like a hat. There are fabulous views of the surrounding countryside and nearby Mount Zwegabin.
