Sagaing
Sagaing lies about 20 km southwest of Mandalay on the opposite bank of the Irrawaddy River. It was a former capital for a few years between 1760 and 1763 during the reign of King Naungdawgyi and with its many Buddhist monasteries is an important religious centre today. The numerous pagodas and monasteries crowd the surrounding hills along the ridge running parallel to the river.
