Refugio da Ilha is located on the southern border of the Pantanal about 145 miles west of Campo Grande on a 4000 ha river island, just 40 metres from the Salobra River. Three thousand hectares is a private reserve, whilst 1000 ha is used for cattle farming. It is a converted farmhouse with 7 ensuite guest rooms (all with a/c and ceiling fans) and is surrounded by lagoons and marshes. The wildlife is abundant with 35 species of mammals (including Giant Anteaters and Giant Otters) and 350 species of birds. Excursions include motorized canoe tours along the Salobra River, lagoon tours by electric motor and kayaks, hikes along river bank trails, through scrub and savanna, and horseback riding through the marshes.
