Fazenda Barranco Alto

Rating: Mid-range

Fazenda Barranco Alto overview

Barranco Alto is located 175 miles North West of Campo Grande and is reached by a 55 minute light aircraft flight.

The fazenda is a traditional low impact extensive cattle ranch with 4 ensuite guest rooms with air conditioning and private verandas. The fazenda is managed along sustainable principles, with all non-organic waste reused or recycled and organic waste composted. The cost of a stay at this fazenda is high because of the transportation costs but the remoteness of the location and the limited number of rooms make for an intimate Pantanal experience.

Open: Fazenda Barranco Alto is open from March to December.

Location: Fazenda Barranco Alto is in the southern Pantanal wetlands. The farm has an airstrip and is 280kms northwest of Campo Grande, 55 minutes by light aircraft and 120kms (30 minute flight) from Aquidauana. The property occupies 11,000 hectares and includes a working cattle ranch. The lodge is situated on the banks of the Rio Negro and is about 300 metres from the farm.

Rooms: There are 4 air conditioned guest rooms (3 twin and 1 double), simply but comfortably furnished in authentic Pantanal style, located in a single building. All have an en-suite bathroom with hot water shower and a veranda overlooking the river.

Activities: A wide range of activities is offered including wildlife viewing in open 4x4 vehicles, bird watching, horse riding, hiking (guided or self-guided), canoeing, boating, fishing, photography, cowboy activities including cattle mustering, beach visits, astronomy.

Facilities: The lodge has a dining room, an indoor lounge and a shaded patio with chairs and hammocks. Food is traditional and much of the produce comes from the farm. Water, soft drinks, caipirinhas and beer are included and wine can be bought from the kitchen. There is a library with a range of reference books and a telescope for star gazing. The farm sometimes hosts researchers and conservationists who can give talks to guests.

Dining: Meals are taken communally.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome.

Health: Fazenda Barrance Alto is not in a malarial area.

Communication: There is internet access in the library. The resident naturalist guide can contact the farm by phone in an emergency.
