Pom Pom Camp

Okavango Delta

Rating: Mid-range

Pom Pom Camp overview

Pom Pom Camp is located on Pom Pom Island in a private concession in the Okavango Delta, on the western edge of the Moremi Game Reserve. The Delta covers an area of some 16,000 square kilometres and supports a wealth of flora and fauna. This is a traditional tented camp with the attributes of a spendid setting, mix of land and water-based activities, and attentive, friendly service.

The camp is set under a grove of trees offering shade from the sun and overlooks a permanent lagoon, a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset. The vintage-style canvas tents offer spacious accommodation with open air en-suite facilities, a private lounge area and a veranda. The main building, under thatch and canvas, houses the lounge, dining area and bar as well as the pool. There is also a gift shop and boma area.

Activities offered include game drives, night drives, mokoro trips and walks. The best game viewing is offered in the Delta, where guests have the opportunity of seeing all major predators, a variety of big game and plains game, as well as an abundance of bird life.

details

Open: Pom Pom Camp is open all year.

Location: Pom Pom Camp is on an island in the Matsebe Concession of the Okavango Delta. The camp has its own airstrip which is a 20 minute flight from Maun.

Rooms: There are 9 large walk-in tents set beneath the shade of tall trees and overlooking a lagoon which attracts varied wildlife. All have en-suite bathrooms, open to the sky, with shower, twin hand basins and flush toilet. Toiletries are provided. Each tent has a small seating area separated from bedroom by sliding glass doors. The secluded honeymoon suite has an outdoor bath. There is one larger tent that can accommodate a family of up to four (two adults and two children). Tents are cooled by fans and have electric lights.

Activities:
At Pom Pom you can take mokoro and motorboat rides, go fishing, take day and night game drives and go bird watching. Nature walks are offered when possible.

Facilities: The core of the camp is a thatched building containing the bar, lounge and dining area. There are charging points and a curio shop. In front of this is an open air space with a camp fire where drinks and pre-dinner snacks are served. There is a swimming pool close to the main lodge. The camp has a laundry service. The camp is lit by lamps at night and it is a good idea to take a torch. The camp is open (unfenced) and guards escort you to and from tents after dark.

Dining: Meals are taken communally with other guests, camp managers and guides, around the large dining table. They are generally buffets. The 'dining in the wild' is an atmospheric 3-course bush dinner by a campfire in a special location 10 minutes from the camp.

Children: Children aged 6 years and older are welcome.  A private vehicle must be booked for children aged 6-11.  The minimum age for walking safaris and mokoro excursions is 12 years.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is no internet access.

Mrs Rebecca Bissell

"The camp was very luxurious, the tents were fantastic and everyone was very friendly. Food was excellent also. "

Peter Payne
"This was a first class camp with excellent facilities. Barbara and Bruce were the hosts and the staff were very friendly, helpful, informative and accommodating. We enjoyed our stay here very much. This was the peak of the safari holiday."
Rupert Browning
"Definetly the best accommodation of the holiday, very luxurious. Clean, good food. Barbara and Bruce, were very welcoming and friendly, went out of there way to help us."
Allyson Burt
"Very welcoming. Great food. Lovely hot water bottles. We were well looked after and the tents were excellent with comfortable seating good bathroom facilities which will be even better when they put up the extra towel rails. The guides and trackers were excellent although the game was not as good as at Kwara. Nice setting."
Ruth Samways
"Could live in the tent as it was so well designed & furnished - (only refurbished in March). The wake-up call was a cup of tea! The main lodge was large & seemed rather too staged for me. Unfortunately I could not hear the guide,Partner, from my van`s middle seat. Also, after a couple of hours off-road searching for a leopard, when asked to give up this hunt by the members of his van he did not."
