Mala Mala and Mashatu

7 days from £2845pp plus international flights.

An imaginative combination of two superb game viewing destinations: Mashatu in Botswana and Mala Mala in South Africa, providing a top quality safari. Mashatu, 'Land of Giants', is known for its big game, and Mala Mala's rich wildlife regularly attract documentary makers. Game drives are supplemented by guided walks, horse riding and mountain biking. All packed into just 7 days, this is a small but perfectly formed safari!

Mashatu, the largest private game reserve in Botswana, borders both South Africa and Zimbabwe, forming part of a massive wildlife conservation area containing multiple ecosystems. It's a wonderful wilderness area blessed with diverse animal and bird life, ripe for exploration.

Mala Mala is the oldest private game reserve in South Africa, and is part of the world-famous Greater Kruger area. This is Big 5 territory and has large concentrations of game making it a safari destination par excellence. A range of habitats provide varied backdrops to wildlife viewing and you'll have no end of photo opportunities.

You'll be staying in intimate camps providing spacious, en-suite accommodation, and plenty of space to unwind during breaks between activities, and facilities including viewing decks and swimming pools. Both camps welcome children of all ages making this a great holiday for families.

You'll be met on arrival in Mashatu Game Reserve and transferred to Mashatu Main Camp, where you'll spend the next 3 nights. Having settled in to your air-conditioned suite and depending on your arrival time you'll be served lunch or tea. Later you'll then set off on an introductory game drive. As the light fades towards sunset, you'll stop for sundowner drinks and a chance to enjoy views of the African bush. Returning to the camp the tracker will use a spotlight to locate and identify nocturnal creatures, and you'll be back in time for dinner in the boma, beneath a canopy of stars. Dinner

You'll awake early to a hot drink and snack before the morning game drive departs. Mashatu is known as the 'land of giants' which include elephant, giraffe, lion, eland, ostrich and kori bustard, as well as the 'upside-down' baobab tree, many of which you should see today. You'll return to the camp in mid-morning, when brunch is served, followed by time to relax, maybe enjoying a swim in the pool. After high tea you'll set out on the afternoon game drive and another opportunity to experience the varied habitats of Mashatu, which include open plains, marshlands and forests. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Your second full day in Mashatu offers more game drives, or, if you prefer, you can vary the day with some horse riding or mountain biking, experiencing the great outdoors from a different angle. Walking safaris offer the chance to observe nature close-up and in detail, and there are viewing hides for wonderful wildlife viewing and photographic opportunities. Back in camp by the end of the day you'll be able to share your experiences with fellow travellers over a drink in the bar. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

If you rise early you'll have time for a last safari in Mashatu. After brunch you'll be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Polokwane in South Africa to clear customs, and then on to Mala Mala in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. You should arrive in mid-afternoon, where a driver will be waiting to transfer you to the main camp. Relax in the lounge or on the shaded deck, watching wildlife by the Sands River. In the late afternoon you'll meet your ranger who will take you on a game drive, for chances to see elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard, to name a few! You'll be back at the camp in time to enjoy a delicious dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Your ranger will meet you before the morning game drive to discuss possible itineraries and check if you have any particular preferences. Once underway in the open 4x4 vehicle you'll appreciate his knowledge and skill, especially when it comes to off-road driving which allows you to get close to game and to get some first rate photographs. You'll spend the hottest part of the day resting in camp, cooling off with a dip in the pool and browsing through books in the library. There's a second safari in the late afternoon before you return for dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Your day will follow a similar pattern, revolving around game drives, with activities being tailored as much as possible to suit your wishes. Additional activities include guided bush walks, usually taking place after breakfast, and night drives where you can search for nocturnal species. Whatever you chose, you'll have a full and rewarding day on safari. Tonight you'll dine in al fresco in the boma, your meal complimented by your choice of wines from the cellar. Breakfast, lunch, dinner
