Khwai Tented Camp

Okavango Delta

Rating: Mid-range    Price from: £330 - £420 pp full board

Khwai Tented Camp overview

Khwai Tented Camps is part of African Bush Camps and is a perfect example of a local community living in harmony with wildlife.  The Khwai area is just north of the Moremi Game Reserve and has some wonderful game viewing, especially along the Khwai river. The area is known for predators and you may have sightings of leopard, wild dogs or lion, though none of this is guaranteed. The camp has a pretty scenic setting on the banks of a lagoon which flows into the river. None of the structures are permanent, meaning they can be removed leaving no footprint. It's a simpler life in harmony with nature.

Khwai Tented camp is small and intimate, with just 7 tents in the style of the old 'East Africa Meru' accommodation with a contemparary twist. The large walk in safari tents have comfortable beds, en-suite bathrooms with showers and flush toilets . Rustic luxury is the best way to describe this camp! An authentic African safari experience sleeping under canvas but with comfortable facilities.

From here you'll be offered day and night game drives, walking and visits to the local village and when water levels allow you can enjoy the quintessential Delta experience with a mokoro trip.

details

Open: Open all year.

Location: The camp is located within the Khwai Community Concession, bordering the Moremi Game Reserve. The camp is set on the edge of a lagoon which runs into the Khwai River. The camp is about a 30 minute drive from the Khwai airstrip, which can be reached from Maun and Kasane.

Rooms: There are 6 meru-style tents, all overlooking the Khwai River and Moremi Game Reserve beyond. The accommodation is simple in style but spacious and comfortable. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom with flush toilet and shower. The tents and bathrooms are insect proof.

Activities: The camp offers game drives in the Khwai reserve as well as in the Moremi Game Reserve. Night drives in the Khwai reserve are a great way to spot otherwise elusive nocturnal species. Guided safari walks are popular. Guests can also take a guided walk to the local village of Khwai.

Facilities: The main tented area has a lounge/library with comfy sofas and a bar and dining area. Evening drinks can be enjoyed around the camp fire.

Dining: Meals are taken communally.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome, however we think it is better suited to children over the age of 7.

"Excellent. Delightful staff, great food, wonderful guide. Jeep safaris meant we were able to travel over quite large areas to see different animals. Our guide, Gideon, was keen to ensure that we saw what we wanted and was very knowledgable. Often there were other vehicles at viewing areas but this wasn't a problem, we were too busy watching the animals! Staff provided excellent meals with a different experience on each of the 3nights we were there."
