Chalalan Ecolodge

Tropical Lowlands

Rating: Modest

Chalalan Ecolodge overview

You reach Chalalan Lodge by a 5-6 hour ride in a motorised canoe from the town of Rurrenabaque, making you aware of the remoteness of the location. This is a pristine environment and you will spend your days exploring with a local guide on foot and by canoe as you delve deep into the rainforest and seek out its wildlife. It is a real privilege to be immersed in nature.

The cabins provide accommodation for a maximum of just 30 guests, so the lodge ever feels crowded. Most cabins have en-suite bathrooms, and all have verandas with hammocks for resting between activities. The lodge is located on the banks of Lake Chalalan and the water is safe for swimming, another good way to unwind.

You can sample local cuisine, as well as national and continental meals in the restaurant. The food is healthy and nutritious. Fresh fruit juices are provided to accompany meals, and other drinks, including alcohol, are available at the bar. Meals can be eaten together with other guests or at private tables, as preferred. There are regular 'dunucuabi' dinners consisting of catfish wrapped in leaves in the traditinal style, followed by displays of singing and dancing.

Ths staff are drawn from the local community of San Jose se Uchupiamonas, and are well trained in all aspects of hospitality to provide friendly and efficient service.

Open: Chalalan Ecolodge is open all year. The best months to visit are between April and November (dry season).

Location: The lodge is by Chalalan Lake in the Tuichi Valley in Madidi National Park in the western Amazon. The lodge is accessed via the town of Rurrenabaque, by motorised canoe which takes 5-6 hours. Rurrenabaque is a 50-minute flight from La Paz. The lodge is owned and run by the local community.

Rooms: There are 14 cabins accommodating a maximum of 30 guests. These include 4 twins with shared bathroom facilities, 7 en-suite twin or triple cabins, and 3 larger en-suite cabins with double beds. All have mosquito nets, bedside tables, wardrobes, easy chairs and verandas with hammocks.

Activities: Liaise with the lodge’s guides regarding activities. You can explore the lake by dugout canoe with a guide. There are many walking trails you can follow, also with a guide, which concentrate on plants, birds or animals. The Penena clay lick can be reached on a 5 hour walk from the lodge. Night hikes and canoe trips are offered. Star gazing is popular. The maximum group size for each activity is 6 guests. Guides are local to the area and speak English and Spanish.

Facilities: The lodge has a large dining room and bar. You can spend downtime reading, relaxing in a hammock or swimming in the lake. Local people are invited to the lodge to perform traditional songs and dances on certain evenings.

Dining: Regional, national and international dishes are available, with fresh fruit juices to accompany meals. Traditional ‘dunucuabi’ dinners are served on some nights. The bar serves a range of drinks including alcoholic beverages. Meals can be enjoyed as a group or at individual tables. Breakfast is served buffet style.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Travelling to and from the lodge is quite tiring and may not be suitable for young children. There are no specific activties for children.

Health: We recommend malaria prophylactics for a visit to Bolivia.

Communication: There is limited Wi-Fi internet access in the restaurant but it should not be relied upon.
