January is the green season in many African countries, so can be a great for bird watching.  It is also a good time to go to the Sahara desert as it is a cooler time. The southern Serengeti is a prime wildlife destination at this time too. 

1. 

   Botswana

   • Zebra migration in Savuti and the Makgadikgadi Pans. 
   • The green season is excellent for birding.
   • Certain lodges offer great green season rates. 
2. 

   Ecuador

   • Good month to climb Cotopaxi.
3. 

   Galapagos

   • One of the best month’s for diving (clear waters). 
   • Galapagos Turtles start mating.
   • Green sea turtles are breeding.
   • On Espanola adult marine iguanas start to become red, green and black and the mating season begins.

   Kenya

   • Rift Valley lakes are good particularly for birding.
5. 

   Malawi

   • This is one of the best times to visit Malawi (warm weather and calm lake).
6. 

   Morocco

   • Great time for walks in the Saghro region, as it's cool.
7. 

   Nepal

   • Good time for birding due to the cross-over between winter and summer migrants.
8. 

   Peru

   • No Inca trail treks.  This is the wet season, and trekking at this time of year does not allow the trail to recover from its heavy use the rest of the year.
9. 

   South Africa

   • Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles off KwaZulu Natal coastline.
10. 

    Tanzania

    • The herds of the annual migration are in southern Serengeti (calving time, excellent for predators).
    • Good time to visit the Selous Game Reserve, and also Ruaha NP as –both are quiet and lush.
