Volunteer Trips in Nepal

Sermathang Village

Sermathang is about 85km north-east of Kathmandu valley and situated in the Jugal Himalayan Range.

The school was thriving and  nationally acclaimed when the Maoist conflict saw it forcibly closed in 2001 along with the village health centre. The determination of the community and the dedication of a number of former pupils saw its reopening late in 2009.

The teachers are dedicated to the wellbeing and development of the children in their care but have had little or no teacher training, although many of them are educated to degree level. The Community Trust that runs the school is keen to offer rudimentary healthcare to the children at the school and, in time, to reopen the healthcare centre. The Trust is currently working with Dhulikhel Hospital with a plan to open an officially recognised health centre at the school

The communities for miles around are completely committed to the school, making this placement perfect for the volunteer who wants to thoroughly immerse themselves in rural life - the villagers will share their ever day life and spiritualism, most are Buddhists, with you.

You will have a private room living with a local family Conditions are simple, but the community will do all they can to welcome you.
