Rwanda holidays

Rwanda is a beautiful East African country supporting a wide diversity of flora and fauna. It offers many activities including hiking, walking Gorilla treks and chimp tracking. There are 170 species of mammals, 670 birds and 400 butterflies.

The focus of holidays to Rwanda tends to be a gorilla safari or gorilla trekking. This is indeed an incredibly special experience, but not the only holiday experience which this country can offer. Rwanda holidays can include some beautiful sightseeing and an interesting insight to the history and culture of this up and coming country. The Virunga Mountains in the north are the most popular destination for of course the amazing experience of trekking the mountain gorillas but there are other treks and cultural activities in this region too.

The most visited park is the Parc National des Volcans which is dominated by the Virunga volcanoes which span the borders of Congo and Uganda too. This park is where Dian Fossey worked in her study of mountain gorilla behaviour.

The main airport is Kigali which is quite centrally placed and has a good range of hotels as well. We recommend spending time in Kigali to learn about the history and culture and experience the vibrant city life.

To the south of the country is the Nyungwe Forest National Park which is home to around 1000 chimps and huge troops of colobus monkey plus some more unusual mammals such as giant forest hogs. There are masses of tree species and butterflies and orchids here too and many forest trails can be hiked. Chimp trekking here though is not guaranteed, it's a bit of a challenge! However, the rainforest experience is beautiful and well worth a few days in the area on its own merits.

To the west is huge Lake Kivu, the Rwanda equivalent of 'the beach'! You can spend a few days here relaxing or mixing with the local fishing communities who live along the shores and wandering the leafy streets of old colonial towns.
