    4. Comprehensive. Would suggest that a head torch is added to the rainforest list. Better than a handheld. Also a head sweatband which I found particularly useful to stop the sweat running into your eyes when taking photos. Photography: Watch humidity. Use drybag and silica gel packets if poss. Change lenses infrequently. Upgrade your advice for digital cameras and not film. Waterproofing is very important for the canoe trips, more in the Huaorani visits than for Sacha. Expect to live in damp clothes. Maximum weight for all luggage for the small plane flight to the Huaorani is 15Kg and so it is best to travel light and leave something in Quito or, better still, get the Quito agents to ship it ahead to the Sacha Lodge. No need for warm clothing, tripod (too cumbersome), smarter shoes or laptop at this stage. Take enough camera flash cards, however. Finally, the tipping of guides is an uncertain business, and it would be good to have some much more concrete suggestions on this. There is a tendency by some to over-tip (for instance Americans) and others follow suit from embarrassment. It can be the single biggest expense at this stage of a trip.

    4. Very pleased with the package that was put together. The choice of places to visit matched exactly what I had requested at the outset. The information pack with details on local custom, tipping, items to take was spot on and really helpful. There were some deviations from the itinerary once there but these were minor and generally of a positive nature.

He responded by return to all our travel queries at every stage of planning our holidays. Well done. We also appreciated support provided by emergency duty staff on the early hours of our departure on Monday 3 October 2011 when our flight to Madrid was cancelled.

    4. 2 of the 4 hotels recommended were very good. The other 2 being Nu House and Jose Antonio were not up to 4 star status and not appealing especially Nu House. Re visit your 4 star hotels. Surely there are certain standards of being a 4 star hotel. The other aspects were a good experience of booking with Tribes.

      Tribes Response - We do not rate hotels by star standard as these vary so much from country to country. We do not describes hotels as being 3 or 4 stars but recommend them to passengers individually based on our experiences and the hotel charcateristics. When passengers often come to us with requests for 3 or 4 star hotels, we try to recommend them hotels which we think are suitable for them based on their preferences and our experiences.

    4. Our itinerary was incorrect. For the day moving from Hazyview to Nottens, the itinerary stated that we had a morning game drive, which was wrong. Also, it would have been very useful to have been told that we should get to Nottens between 2pm (check-in time) and 3pm (high tea).

    4. Service was very good at the initiation as Tribes tried to deliver exactly what I asked for. It was let down later by absence of information (on flight changes) and lack of response to e-mail. Also the route and locations were not all as I had requested.

      TRIBES REPLY: Having spoken to Mr Haywood, we discovered that the flight changes mentioned were very last minute changes to a domestic flight from Dar es Salaam. These things do happen, and are of course out of our control. Being so last minute we were also unable to give any warning of this.
      The lack of response to email was one only one occasion. Mr Haywood acknowledged that all other emails were dealt with promptly and well.
      The route and locations were all as discussed with Mr Haywood, but inevitably once on the ground it occasionally happens that personal preference for some places do change what you might have done in hindsight. Happily this does not occur very often, but on this occasion Mr Haywood would have preferred a bit mroe time in one safari camp and less in another, and it does seem that the Zanzibar lodge we recommended to him was not quite right for him. We have apologised for this.

If prices were comparable I would choose to travel BA rather than Kenya Airways - food and service not bad but not wonderful either and many on-board entertainment outlets (and sometimes whole system) not working (and had feeling unlikely to be repaired)

We did have to chase our tickets 4 weeks before leaving and one set of flight e-tickets were missing but no probs! Maybe due to our lead travel consultant leaving and passing info on to colleagues... Honeymoon gift voucher service for our wedding gifts was fantastic. All our guests commented how good the service was when they phoned. Lovely to come back to personalised vouchers.

    4. Tribes were very knowledgeable and extremely helpful, and put up with endless questions and changes of itineraries from us. My only criticisms are small - our invoice said we'd booked a 4x4 but when we inquired furhter there was no guarantee of a 4x4. In fact there was no problem as the car we were given was indeed a 4x4 but it was just a slight pain to have the doubt. Also, I didnt realise the wealth of information that we would get on arrival from the South African host so I wasted money on buying a road atlas which we were given, and wasted time on looking up and printing out driving instructions which were supplied to us.

    4. Tribes were always at the end of the emails when I had lots of questions. The only area where I would say we could have been better advised before we were on our honeymoon was regarding tipping. We just did what we thought best but hopefully it was right and the amount of cash we took as discussed with Polly was fine ($400 on tips and few mementos, visas until we got to Livingstone). Conor said that Tribes should warn people of the hassle they will get when all the locals descend on them at the Zambian shores and again at Victoria Falls which was worse than Marrakech souks and various tourist places I've been in Cairo and Istanbul. The locals will pester and harass you and not let you look at stalls in even 1 second of peace and one tried to guide us from Zambia - Zimbabwe eventually we shook him off and he ended up getting into a fight with an armed guard and getting arrested.

Tracy, our consultant, took infinite trouble to get to know us, our interests and what we wanted to get out of this special trip to celebrate our 60th birthdays. Throughout the planning stage, even when we were talking to more than one agent, she was always there for us with ideas, alternatives and just advice. She happily incorporated parts of the trip we ourselves specified; came up with brilliant ways structuring the itinerary without exhausting ourselves; and dealt with a last-minute crisis without batting an eye-lid - and at no extra cost! From a wider perspective, even when Tracy was not herself there, someone else in the Tribes office very capably dealt with queries.

    4. We did most of our arrangements via e-mail, just easier when you are working. They have us down to a tee now. Worked up a recommendation and adjusted it to meet time and budget constraints. We were advised to take us dollars when in actual fact the local currency was mostly used with SA Rand also widely accepted. We did find outlets who wouldn't take US Dollars.

Only irritation was believing we had booked premium economy seats for our return journey - outward we were shown as class 'o' and return class 'n', we assumed these different letters meant different classes of travel - so incurring a 1,200 additional cost at the flight desk. Note for others - Zambia require $50 cash visa for each entrant to their county.

She spent several long conversations on the phone answering my questions and ensuring that I had enough details so that I felt I was making informed decisions about the details of our holiday. Pre-departure information was excellent - detailed, and informative. The only bit of information that could usefully be added is that the airline flying between Quito and Napo does not allow you to take any aerosol sprays on board (none of the other airlines used, e.g. to Galapagos had this rule), so our poor guides had to look after several cans of deodorant while we were away! It would have been useful to be aware of this before we left.

    4. In general the organisation of the holiday was excellent and we have no major complaints about this. The service of Tribes in the UK was brilliant, Paul was exceptionally helpful at all stages even the difficult ones. We were slightly less impressed with the Indian ground handler however - They had changed our itinerary when we arrived. It was only a minor change that meant we spent our last night at Dhikala rather than the second to last, however this meant we had to travel out of the forest, to the airport and home in the same clothes rather than having a chance to change at Tiger Camp. Our final itinerary that came with the bill had different details to that we were given on arrival. Tribes Response: This change was forced by an overbooking at the government-run lodge inside Corbett National Park, requiring the dates to be changed by our ground handlers in India at the last minute. The government-run lodges are the only ones inside Corbett, so we do use them for their location, but we are aware they do have problems with their organisation. - Also in Delhi we were dropped off at the station early by the driver and left, there was no-one to guide us into the station and make sure we got onto the train. The porters at this station were very insistent and I am sure the lack of a guide meant we got ripped off and even then he wanted more money from us. (The driver at the other end stayed with us until we were on the train and in the correct carriage which was more acceptable). Tribes Response: This was a mistake by our ground handlers - our passengers should be taken to their seat on the train. - Finally as detailed in the travel section below we weren't booked into the same compartment on the train from Katni to Agra. Tribes Response: The allocation of berths on the train is handled by the bureaucracy of Indian Railways. While couples should be allocated berths together, we can not guarantee this as it is out of our control.

    4. Our flight to Quito the day before our trip was diverted to Guayaquil because of poor visibility. We waited at Guayaquil for 6 hours, with little information, before they finally put us on a plane back to Quito, which arrived at about 11.30pm. As we had to be back at the airport for 5am the next day we did consider staying at the airport, but good job we didn't because all of our information was waiting for us at our hotel. With the benefit of hindsight perhaps it would have been better to allow an extra day in Quito before flying to the Galapagos.

    4. Definitely positive. For one, Tribes knew where Malawi was on the map!! The knowledge of the region, the lodges, and Africa in general was really different than anyone else we spoke to. We worked the trip around getting back to a village I had volunteered in, and Dee (our Tribes lady) knew everything I was talking about. We couldn't have done our honeymoon like this without the superiour knowledge from Tribes.
