Not up to expectations. We had asked for a location with wildlife and snorkelling. The beach area had no sea-life and the nearest snorkelling was 5 miles way by boat. The wind was from the South and caused waves and noise all ay particulalry at night time. On hindsight and with the desires we had for the tour we should have stayed in the north.
TRIBES REPLY: We have spoken with Mr Haywood about this. Whilst Fumba gets many excellent feedbacks as a rule, it does seem that Fumba Beach was not the right choice for Mr Haywood. We have apologised for getting it wrong on this occasion.
Robinson Crusoe atmosphere at the beach. Dinner on a little terrace possible: you sit right under the Southern Cross. Friendly staff, good service. Great meal.
We had a very good experience here- our sea-view room was situated close to all the services and just a few steps from what seemed our own private beach. The service was attentive - Natasha was a very good hands-on manager. We saw her frequently throughout our stay. Dinners were very good and at a different location each evening- especially liked the one on the beach surrounded by candles located in holes dug in the sand. Thank-you Julius for our impromptu Kiswahili lessons at mealtimes as well as great service. Good diving with on-site dive shop, healthy reef with lots of variety and personal attention from staff and a nice family-run shop. Loved the beach - not big enough for a long stroll but good swimming and the sand was like icing sugar. I wanted to sit with my feet buried in it forever!
This is a wonderful piece of paradise, only half an hour drive from the airport. We did not go on any excursions from Fumba as we had arranged to stay a night in Stone Town before going on the safaris. They had an excellent diving school run by husband and wife, Lauren and David, who gave our son, one-to-one tuition and he managed to complete his Advanced Open Water Padi Diving certificate with them. There was a lovely pool and several private beach areas with gorgeous white sands and heavenly views. Bushbabies and monkeys can be seen running around the lodge. The food was excellent: they grow their own salads and we had no problems at all with 'stomach issues'! Although electricity was sometimes off during the day, it was otherwise on in the evenings and therefore one could charge batteries, use hairdryers etc. The staff were delightful, always smiling and they went out of their way to accommodate our son's nut allergy problem. We could not recommend Fumba Beach Lodge more highly if you want a complete getaway and relax.
Fumba was another step up again in terms of quality, although we did start to lose the 'small friendly lodge' vibe we had enjoyed at Shooting Star. However, the candlelit meals in various locations were really amazing - as were the stars.
