North Luangwa is one of Africa's finest safari destinations but is little visitied due to the remoteness and accessibility. It combines well with South Luangwa and there is an airstrip so you can fly between the two.
There are a few rustic walking camps, no real roads and real feeling of remoteness and exclusivity. The wildlife here is amazing and home to endangered species such as rhino and wild dogs.
In the late 1960s the Luangwa Valley was home to about 8000 Black Rhino which were hunted and poached to near extinction. In 2003 five rhinos were received via the Frankfurt Zoological Society and the North Luangwa Conservation Project. A calf was born in 2005 and another in 10 animals were introduced in 2006. More have been brought in more recently and it is hoped that they will breed to provide a stable population once again.
Walking safaris here are fantastic along the Mwaleshi River or around the Muchinga Escarpment. There are plentiful sightings of elephant, buffalo and lions.
