About Mkuze Falls Private Game Reserve

  • Close Panel

Mkuze Falls is located in Kwa Zulu Natal and easilly accessed from Durban or Johannesburg by road. It is sited between the Kruger and the Indian Ocean.

It is one of only two reserves in the region that is home to the big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard) and over 400 bird species, plus hippos, cheetah and a wealth of antelope and plains species. The reserve is dominated by the Shembe and Mahlangosi mountains and has incredibly diverse fauna and flora.

Game viewing is offered in open top vehicles with experienced guides and there are never 'rush hours' you will really feel part of a private and exclusive wildlife viewing treat! Bush walks area also offered here. Two game drives a day are offered here and range from 2-3 hours. Walking can also be arranged with the rangers. Both lodges have swimming pools and health spa treatments are available by appointment.

Accommodation here is split between the Main Lodge and Tented Lodge which are about 3km apart. Mkuze Falls Lodge has a central complex built on raised wooden platforms with spacious verandas. The facilities include a dining area, a comfortable lounge, an indoor bar, a shady terrace and a swimming pool. The large lounge leads onto a spacious viewing deck which is built over the sloping riverbank. This veranda provides panoramic views of the winding Mkuze River and the wild, untamed landscape beyond. In the heat of the day, you can relax under the shady palm trees and take a refreshing swim in the sparkling pool. In the evenings, enjoy some lively entertainment provided by the energetic, traditional Zulu dancers. There are eight luxurious thatched chalets and one safari suite here. All rooms have overhead fans, air conditioning, mosquito nets, mini bar, safe and phone. They all have a private plunge pool and outside shower and lovely views.

The safari suite has a small but comfortable and well-equipped kitchen and all the features of the other chalets such as fans, air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. The adjoining private outside shower and splash pool area is spacious and secluded. The Safari Suite also has its own outside terrace with a unique view over the river. A better place to enjoy your intimate dinner will be hard to find.

The Mkuze Falls Tented Lodge is for an adventurous experience in five "Hemingway" style East African Tents, each overlooking the Mkuze River. The tents are built on wooden decks raised on stilts with beautiful views of the lush countryside. The facilities include a lounge, bar, boma and swimming pool. Starlit evenings are enjoyed in the boma and the sounds of the Zulu drumbeat and the noises of the night will lull you to sleep in the wilderness. Each tent has en-suite luxurious bathing facilities, air conditioning, mini bar and safe and it's own private viewing deck.
