Madikwe Game Reserve

The is a park or wildlife reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve covers 75,000 hectares in the north west of South Africa, adjoining the border with Botswana, about 4 hours drive from Johannesburg.

In what was known as 'Operation Phoenix', more than 10,000 animals were brought into Madikwe when it was created in 1991.

You will get the chance to spot the "Big 5" (elephant, leopard, buffalo, lion and rhino), see the second largest herd of elephants in the country, search for spotted hyena, the endangered Wild Dog, and many other species, as well as enjoy some wonderful scenery.

It is a large malaria-free park which has an excellent link with local communities, and benefits them in many different ways, such as offering employment and training opportunities. The reserve's mission is to "conserve wild animals, plants and landscapes for the benefit of the people".

Highlights

  • Large malaria-free reserve.
  • The reserve has an excellent community-tourism project.
  • 'Big Five' wildlife viewing
  • Good chance of seeing Wild Dogs.
  • Only four hours from Johannesburg.
  • Good choice of lodges and camps.

Activities

Wildlife viewing by jeep and on foot; birdwatching.

Non-malarial area.

Best times to go

In the drier, colder months from May to September wildlife tends to congregate at the waterholes and so is easier to see. The vegetation can be dense in the rainy season from October to March.

Getting there

You can either drive to the reserve, or take a short flight from Johannesburg. It links well with the Waterberg region too.
