Lower Zambezi National Park is situated on the northern banks of the Zambezi River, opposite Mana Pools National Park (in Zimbabwe), with a backdrop of the Zambezi escarpment.
The Lower Zambezi Valley forms the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, and areas on both sides are protected reserves. Animals tend not to respect man-made borders so the whole valley has become like one big park, an unspoilt area with stunning scenery and varied wildlife.
There are large concentrations of game between the escarpment and the river, on the alluvial plain. This is dominated by mature acacia and mopane forests and grassland, where the game viewing is excellent.
You can take classic safaris here basing yourself at one of the luxury camps and doing game drives by jeep, or you might like to consider boat trips to view the wildlife from a different perspective. Motor boats or canoe trips are a major attraction in Lower Zambezi and it is also possible to take several day canoe trails, camping along the way with your guide.
Most of the camps here are small, friendly and with a high standard of guiding and services. Some are in the GMA (Game Management Area) just outside the park - where night drives are allowed an most are also quite close to village and school projects if you wish to visit them and those inside the main part of the park. Most camps are on or near the river and unlike other parks, the Zambezi never dries up and always provides a good water source for the fauna and flora all year round.
