A wild and remote park in the west of Zambia surrounded by the countryside of the Lozi tribes people. Liuwa means 'plain' in the Lozi language. It has been a game reserve as far back as the early 19th century, declared by the king of Barotseland, becoming a national park in 1972. Visitor numbers are tiny as this is a real expedition destination with no proper roads!
Liuwa Plains is made up of 3,600 sq km of untouched Africa. The central area is a vast grass covered plain with a few pans and tall palms but in many place just a huge empty horizon. Large parts of the plains are flooded from December to April with water rising in the north and spreading down south. This provokes the migrating herds to move as they travel to new grazing grounds. The huge herds are made up of mainly Blue Wildebeest with smaller groups of zebra, tsessebe and other mammals such as buffalo, red lechwe, eland and roan antelope.
Predators here include lion, leopard, cheetah, wild dog and hyena. There are over 300 bird species including the rare Wattled Cranes.
