Augrabies Falls National Park is about 120 km west of Upington in an arid area of the Northern Cape Province. It covers just under 56,000 hectares along both sides of the Orange River, providing a sanctuary to a diversity of species, from birds and reptiles to springbok, gemsbok and giraffe.
Augrabies waterfall itself is almost 60 metres high and is an awe-inspiring sight (and sound!) when the Orange River is in full flood. The Khoi people called it ‘Place of Great Noise'.
The Orange River Gorge below the falls is a granite gorge about 18 kilometres long. This is a rocky region of stark beauty punctuated by Quiver trees and giant aloes, which are both very characteristic of this Northern Cape landscape.
