Chumbe Island is something very special indeed. Part of the Zanzibar archipelago, Chumbe Island is just a short boat journey from Zanzibar’s' mainland and is a small island set in a marine park. The accommodation on Chumbe Island takes the concept of eco-architecture to unparalleled levels that has seen award winning global recognition for its innovation and conservation principles. As far as Tribes is concerned we wish all accommodation was built on these principles.
The island never gets crowded even when fully booked and it is worth spending at least three nights here to get into the spirit of the place and fully relax. Take a book, laze about and just watch the dhows sailing by.
The whole of Chumbe Island is a nature reserve and you can explore it with the resident park rangers or at your leisure.
One of the main attractions at Chumbe Island is the Coral Park which is a unique shallow water reef sanctuary. That means that Chumbe Island is one of the few places in the world where you can get the experience of a coral reef without having to scuba dive –yes snorkelling is all you really need to do here to see an amazing array of corals. Of course if you do want to scuba dive they can arrange excursions out to nearby reefs as well.
