This is the area of India that most people choose for their first trip. It is the place for classic images of India like the Taj Mahal, people praying and bathing at the edge of the Ganges in Varanasi, great ornate royal palaces that have been turned into exquisite hotels, and an expanse of desert scenery punctuated by camels and people in brightly coloured clothing.

Best times to go

You can travel to theis part of India at any time of year. The main tourist season is from October to mid-April and it is particularly popular over Christmas, January and February. Most people try to avoid the monsoons which are from June to September when temperatures can get very hot as well as it being rainy.

Getting there

You can fly into Delhi's international airport which is the starting point for most trips to this region. There is also a goof network of connecting flights and trains from other parts od the country.
