About Limpopo Province

  • Close Panel

The Limpopo offers a diverse mixture of hot savannah plains and misty mountains, ancient indigenous forests and cycad plants as well as stunning wildlife. In the east, the northern section of the Kruger National Park sits within Limpopo province and in the west is the famous Waterberg region and Marakele National Park. Far to the north, almost at the Zimbabwe border is an area known for huge baobab trees and the border into Botswana gives access to the Tuli Block with dramatic landscapes and activity holidays.

In addition to the natural attractions here this province has a rich cultural heritage of the Venda and Shangaan people. This area is home to many skilled artists and craft centres, museums and homesteads offer places to visit and purchase local goods. The region is rich in ancient rock art and has several World Heritage Sites.

Summer (mid October - February) is hot and winter (May - July) has warm days and cool nights, Rainy season is November to March.

There are fantastic horse riding areas in this province and a variety of private houses and ranches that can be hired out for family groups or friends. Many of these houses are particularly good for children with a host of interesting activities.

About 2.5 hours drive north of Johannesburg is the Waterberg mountain massif which gets its name from the abundant mountain streams and natural springs in the area. Home to some of the country's foremost conservation projects, a large area was declared a UNESCO Savannah Biosphere Reserve in 2001. It is a great place to explore on foot, by jeep or on horseback.

Part of the Waterberg is the large private game reserve of Lapalala Wilderness. This was founded by conservationst Clive Walker who was instrumental in reintroducing endangered black rhino to this area. It is a beautiful place with lakes, canyons and hills and home to a variety of wildlife, including 20 species of antelope.

Near the northern town of Louis Trichardt is the Albasini Dam and Luonde Mountains which is the heartland of the Venda and Shangaan people.
