The Kathmandu Valley is at the heart of Nepal. It was once home to three independent kingdoms, now the modern cities of Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur and contains many important temples and monuments. On the rim of the valley, Dulikhel and Nagakot are hill stations which offer beautiful mountain views and great opportunity for trekking.
The Kathmandu Valley was once dominated by the Newari people, and it is possible to see fine Newari architecture in many of the villages of the region. Today, the region is home to almost 3 million people from many different ethnic groups from all around Nepal, as well as a sizeable population of Tibetan refugees.
