Whale Coast

This is a coastal region

The Cape Whale Coast is a region which is roughly 65km between Cape Town and George, and includes the Overberg and some of the Garden Route.

As the name suggests, it includes some of the country's best whale watching coastline. The region contains a huge concentration of Southern Right Whales, which come into the Mossel Bay area to calve. There are however three other whale species found here - the Humpback, Bryde's and Killer Whales.

Late June to mid-November is the best time to come to see the whales here, and you can see them from land, as well as boat whale watching trips being available.

Hermanus is one of the best known town's from which to see the whales, and the town boasts its own 'whale crier' to let you know when the whales can be spotted from shore.

Other marine life can also be seen here, including dolphins, African penguins and Cape fur seals.
