North Luangwa Walking Trails

Taking in both North and South Luangwa National Parks, this is another fantastic walking safari from Robin Pope Safaris.

In South Luangwa you spend 5 nights at Robin Pope Camps (probably Nkwali and Tena Tena) then transfer by private light aircraft up to North Luangwa, spending 4 nights at this stunning site on the banks of the Mwaleshi River in the heart of the North Luangwa National Park. This camp offers the ultimate walking safari for those who seek true wilderness , there are oly six guests accomodated here and you can walk for days and see no-one else.

North Luangwa is renowned for it's superb wildlife and pristine environment, safaris here are primarily on foot only but a vehicle is used to get to excursions further afield such as the Chipopma falls.

Trip information

Included

Road transfers, most drinks, laundry, national park fees, game viewing excursions.

Not included

International and internal flights; travel insurance; visas; departure taxes.

Is it for you?

Walks are led by an experienced naturalist and accompanied by an armed game scout. The walking is not very difficult, but the terrain is obviously uneven and unpredictable.

Best time

Available from June to October. The dry season from May to November is when wildlife begins to congregate at the dwindling water sources, offering good viewing opportunities. October is the hottest month, with temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C or more. November to April is known as the 'green season', with rain almost every day, normally in short downpours. Birdwatching is at its best and many of the herds have young with them. The vegetation is thicker, and there is less dust.

Getting there

There are several direct flights each week from Europe to Lusaka and to Lilongwe (Malawi). It is about a 10 hr flight. There are also daily flights to Johannesburg (South Africa). We can arrange the internationals from the UK and all connecting flights. Most journeys in Zambia involve internal flights as road travel is difficult on poor roads and is not recommended in most cases. There is a good network of internal scheduled flights and charters.Return flights to Lusaka from the UK start from about £500 and internal flights between airport and between South and North Luangwa need to be added onto the price.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
