Norman Carr Safaris

Norman Carr pioneered the first walking safari in the 1950's. Today in South Luangwa, Norman Carr Safaris have 4 bush camps - Luwi, Nsolo, Kakuli and Mchenja, plus a luxury lodge - Kapani. We recommend all the camps and they can be built into any Zambia itinerary.

Kapani is open year round and the bush camps operate in the dry season June to end of October. Luwi and Nsolo are deep in the heart of the northern part of South Luangwa on sandy river beds and Kakuli and Mchenja are on the Luangwa river opposite the Nsefu sector. All bush camps are small and personal usually with 4 rooms and all rustically built, Mchenja being the most luxurious. It is possible to walk between the camps and staying a while to incorporate at least 2 different bush camps is recommended.

Best time

The bush camps are open June - October, plus Mchenja January to March as well. The dry season from May to November is when wildlife begins to congregate at the dwindling water sources, offering good viewing opportunities. October is the hottest month, with temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C or more. November to April is known as the 'green season', with rain almost every day, normally in short downpours. Birdwatching is at its best and many of the herds have young with them. The vegetation is thicker, and there is less dust.

Getting there

There are several direct flights each week from Europe to Lusaka. It is about a 10 hr flight. There are also daily flights to Johannesburg (South Africa). We can arrange the internationals from the UK and all connecting flights. Most journeys in Zambia involve internal flights as road travel is difficult on poor roads and is not recommended in most cases. There is a good network of internal scheduled flights and charters.Return flights to Lusaka from the UK start from about £500

Duration: Any duration

The main centre of Norman Carr Safaris, Kapani Lodge can be used as an arrival base then any combination of the four bush camps can be put together to suit.  Walking between some of the camps is possible.

Norman Carr spent over 50 years devoting himself to the development of the South Luangwa National Park. In the 1950s he pioneered walking safaris in the Zambian bush. His legacy is Norman Carr Safaris, where conservation and care of the local community remain a priority, and where guiding is still based on the principles that Norman developed. The guiding team at Norman Carr Safaris is widely regarded to be one of  the most experienced and knowledgeable in Zambia - most of them were trained by Norman himself. The company has set up and is committed to a program of guide exchanges allowing expansion of knowledge by experiencing similar wilderness operations both in other Parks in Zambia and also around the world. NCS has a main lodge (Kapani) open year round and four seasonal Bush Camps which are located inside the park.

We suggest 2 nights Kapani Lodge then 5 nights in 2 different bush camps as a good way to spend a week in Luangwa.  This is only available June - October. Kapani is open year round and can be nicely combined with Mchenja during January to March to make the most of the beautiful Emerald Season.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150
