About Tafika Camp

  • Close Panel

Tafika Camp is situated adjacent to the Nsefu sector of South Luangwa National Park. It is the base camp for Remote Africa Safaris, owned and run by John and Carol Coppinger. As well as game drives, Tafika offers walking safaris, cycling and even microlighting.

The remote location is ideal for those who really want to get away from it all. Located on the banks of the Luangwa River, Tafika offers a relaxing and peaceful base from which to enjoy game viewing on foot and by road. The camp is located just outside the park and offers night drives as well as morning and afternoon game drives. There is a huge variety of birdlife which can be observed from the hides around the camp. For the adventurous, there is the chance of a taking a microlight flight with John, to view the area and wildlife from the air. Visits can be arranged to the nearby village and school that the camp helps to support.

There are 6 spacious reed chalets accommodating a maximum of 12 guests. These are built with local materials and have en-suite facilities, including an open air shower. Shaded from the hot noon-day sun by giant Leadwood trees, there are plenty of quiet spots to sit and watch activity on the river where elephants and hippos are frequent visitors, read, or just relax and listen to the sounds of the bush. The food is excellent and utilises fresh fruit and vegetables from the kitchen garden.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

Being the Coppinger's home, Tafika has a nice relaxed feel about it.  Being a keen food gardener myself I was amazed and impressed by their huge veggie garden, I don't know how they keep the animals off!  If you stay here you need to bear in mind you are right on the edge of the park, close to villages and a long way from anywhere else so I would combine it with another camp somewhere deep inside the part for different game viewing.  Having said that, we saw from here a huge pride of lions and a couple of leopard!  Despite my better judgement I got up very early and allowed myself to be taken on John's microlite ..... it feels like you are flying low over the park in nothing more than a wheelbarrow, it was extremely cold up there too!  But totally amazing to get a bird's eye view on the animals below - go on do it!
