About Kakuli Camp

  • Close Panel

Kakuli Bush Camp in South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, is a seasonal camp on the confluence of the Luwi and Luangwa rivers. There are four spacious tents under shady thatched roofs, each with an open-air bathroom. All of the tents overlook the river with stunning views up and down this hippo-packed stretch of river.

There is a lovely chitenge (lounge with a deck) overlooking the grazing lawn that leads down to the river. This area of the park is renowned for its great gameviewing and guests will usually split their time between walking and driving (and boating in the green season).

Guided walking safaris were poineered in the Luangwa Valley and remain arguably the best way to view the wildlife, allowing guests an insight not only into the game but also into the whole natural envrironment. Game drives are offered just after sunrise and at sunset and use open vehicles to enable excellent viewing opportunities.

Kakuli is a great camp if you like a small camp, with very personal service, and you are happy with a really rustic place. Don't confuse rustic with low quality though, they do things very well here.

Highlights

  • Small camp in secluded setting by the Luwi and Luangwa Rivers, in South Luangwa National Park.
  • All tents have views of the river and its wildlife.
  • Guided walks and game drives into the African bush.

Situation

In South Luangwa National Park, Zambia, right next to the river on the west bank, north of Mfuwe.

Activities

Guided walking safaris led by experienced naturalist guides. Day and night game drives in open vehicles.

Facilities

4 en-suite tents offering spacious accommodation, all with views of the river and its attendant wildlife. Central area with views across the grazing lawn leading to the river.

Open

Open from late May to early November. Kakuli is also open from 20th January till 1st April for the green season 'Rivers and Rainbows' safari.

Best time

Frankly any time that this camp is open is the 'best time'. There really is no bad time other than in the midst of the rains (when it is closed). The wildlife in the park is always incredible, so whether you go in the green season and do a lot of wildlife viewing by boat, or in the dry season and enjoy more walks and game drives, this camp is always good.

Meals

Meals are taken at a communal table as there are so few guests. The cooking is really excellent quality.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

I stayed here for a night in the green season - the very end of March to be precise. This meant that I arrived by boat - the only way to get here at this time of year. It was really exciting travelling up the fast flowing Luangwa River for about 40 minutes and almost surprising to see a welcoming party on the riverbanks!

I loved the simplicity of this camp - there’s nothing very permanent here, everything is open and it blends in totally to the surroundings. Having said that, the rooms are really comfy and have good bathrooms.

The mix of walking and boat trips was excellent (though note that in the dry season there are no boat trips so game drives are offered), the food was superb, management of the camp was relaxed and friendly yet efficient, and the guiding of very good quality.

I highly recommend staying here on the ‘Rivers and Rainbows’ trip in the green season, but would also personally love to come back here in the dry season too!

(Thanks to Glen, Innocent and the rest of the staff)
