About Kafunta River Lodge

  • Close Panel

Kafunta River Lodge is set in riverside forest on the banks of the Luangwa River, with South Luangwa National Park at the other side of the river.  Kafunta River Lodge is a safari lodge offering all the creature comforts in a wildlife environment, along with a high standard of personal service and great attention to detail.

The eight ensuite (with shower) private chalets are built on raised wooden under a high thatched roof. Each has a private verandah with stunning views. There are also two larger 'suite' rooms (not on stilts) which have an upper viewing deck and can be converted into triples for families. These have larger bathrooms with shower and bath. All rooms have a mini bar and tea and coffee making facilities and electric fans.

In the centre of Kafunta River Lodge is the spacious bar and dining area with a large deck. Built around a semi-evergreen wild mango tree and thatched in the traditional style, it offers panoramic views over the Luangwa River and the South Luangwa National Park.

Great game viewing and bird watching from the lodge is pretty well guaranteed. The park is home to over 420 species of birds and over 60 species of mammals. It is renowned for its high population of leopards, elephants, hippos and crocodiles.

Adjacent to the bar is the small pool and the only natural hot spring tub in the Luangwa valley! The unique hot spring tub owes its existence to the fact that Kafunta River Lodge was built on top of a natural hot spring offering a constant temperature of 38 degrees which coincidentally offers stunning views over the flood plains and the Luangwa River.

Five minutes from the Lodge is a pontoon giving access to the more remote areas of South Luangwa National Park over the water (in use from early May to mid-November. At other, wetter times, the main park gate is used).

Kafunta is one of the few owner run places in South Luangwa. Ron and Anke Cowan and their son live here most of the year. They also have a great team working with them, headed by Mario Vos, the charming and friendly manager.

We find that Kafunta offers great value for money, and you can also consider using their Island Bush Camp for a more remote experience after a few nights here.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

I came to stay here at the very end of the green season and just as they re-opened the lodge after a massive refurbishment. They've made some great changes to the lodge and I felt very at home here.
The chalets are now very light and airy feeling, and the bathrooms much bigger than before. The beds face the verandah so everything points you towards the truly stunning views over the floodplain on this east bank of the Luangwa river. I woke to the sound of eles passing my room as they sauntered down onto the plain. What a start to my morning.
Stay here if you like a lodge as opposed to a bushcamp, if you want a beautiful place to chill out and watch wildife go by, if you like a place with a family-run feel to it, if you want to have a great wildlife experience, and if you like good food!
Ron, Anke, Mario and Josephat - thanks for a great stay.

I've known this lodge and Ron and Anke for many years and I'm happy to say that I'll still always keep using it!  The location is really good - so much wildlife around camp all the time.  If you like more 'solid' feeling rooms than many of the tented camps but not a huge hotel, it's ideal.  The rooms are huge and have a kind of 'log cabin' feel to them.  I love the outlook over the floodplain here and the new 'suites' are really good value for money.

Josphat is an amazing guide!!  He's been there years and really knows the park inside out ... and he found me a lovely pack of wild dogs, my favourites.
