About Sausage Tree Camp

  • Close Panel

Sausage Tree camp is located on the banks of the Zambezi River, at the heart of the Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia. This exclusive safari camp featured on the BBC's Holiday Programme's 'Ten Best Luxury Destinations' and is the epitome of bush chic. Sausage Tree Camp combines the very best game viewing with traditional safari style and the highest standards of luxury and service. The camp overlooks an expanse of water channels and reed islands.

The camp's French trained chef creates cuisine from his bush kitchen that has given him the reputation as one of Zambia's finest chefs. Three course meals are prepared and enjoyed under the African sky, with white linen and atmospheric candlelight. The central dining and bar area ovrelooks the Zambezi River, and there is also a pool here. Meals can also be served in the bush or on the private deck.

Accommodation at Sausage Tree Camp consists of five 'signature' rooms (3 king, 2 twin), 2 suites, and one house (with two bedrooms). All have private open-air bathrooms, and the suites and house each have a small plunge pool. Local materials are utilised to create a minimalist style in which the reddish brown teak furniture, including sumptuous four-poster beds, contrasts crisply with pure white fabrics and flowing white mosquito nets. Each tent has its own personal muchinda (butler) to attend to guests' every whim. Elephant and other game frequently walk through camp, allowing guests to enjoy game experiences from the comfort of their tents. Kigelia House, still within the camp, has 2 ensuite bedrooms and is ideal for small groups or families. As with the honeymoon suites, this too has its own plunge pool, and it has a large central living area.

Activities include day and night game drives, nature walks, bird watching and bush picnics. The camp can also arrange boat trips for game viewing and to enjoy sundowners, as well as canoeing and fishing.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

Even the ‘signature’ rooms (ie the standard ones) at Sausage Tree Camp are roomy and well-furnished. The larger suites and Kigelia House are huge.
Nicky, the manager, says that one of the real plus points of the camp is its central position in the park.
It’s a high quality camp which is very professionally run and has a great feel to it. I sadly only had time to look around the camp, but would have been very happy indeed to stay.

Amanda Marks, Tribes managing director, visited April 2011

I loved Sausage Tree Camp!  The location is lovely and very tranquil, the food was amazing!  The tents are huge and different in design to other camps in the park.  If  you like luxury but still want somewhere small and tented or if you are on honeymoon, this is ideal.
