Konkamoya in Zambia's Kafue National Park is run by Cooke's African Safaris which is a family run operation, Chris Cooke is the manager and guide here. He was born and bred in Zambia and knows the surrounding bushlands intimately. Your safari guiding experience here will be second to none and Konkamoya offers a range of activities which can easily warrant a 3 night stay.
Lake Itezhi-Tezhi covers an area of 370 sq km which includes grassy banks and plains, rocky bays and areas of submerged trees which provide a haven for water birds and fish. There is a fishing village nearby and guests can travel by boat or canoe to visit these local people.
The lodge is small and intimate with currently just 3 rooms. The unusual design of the main area and rooms is the brain child of Chris and offers a welcome change from the 'traditional safari camp' style! The main 'lapa' area, built on a termite mound, consists of a raised bar and lounge viewing point looking over the lake and on ground level is shaded dining area and night time fire pit area.
The chalets are furnished with either twin or double beds and have flush toilets, shower, hand basin and hot water. Food is varied and plentiful with mainly European style dishes though traditional African food can be provided too. Snacks, sundowners and afternoon tea and cakes are plentiful!
The game viewing around Konkamoya is varied and plentiful with the lake providing a welcome water source for all species. Elephant, buffalo, zebra and many antelope species including roan, puku and waterbuck. The lodge has a resident female leopard who regularly visits at night, sometimes with her mating partner!
Viewing on the plains in front of the lodge provides endless entertainment at any time but is most spectacular in November at the start of the rains with cheetah and wild dog being regularly seen, following herds of buffalo to the lake shore.
The activities at Konyamoya are varied including day and night drives, bush walks, boat safaris (motor boats and canoes). In addition to wildlife based activities you can visit the rocky islands and fishing communities around the lake and the elephant orphanage nearby. There is also a fly camp near the mouth of the Musa River west of Konkamoya. Fishing trips on the lake can also be arranged.
