Norman Carr Safaris Walking Safari

Norman Carr pioneered the first walking safari in Zambia's South Luangwa in the 1950’s. Using their bushcamps as your base, we can help you plan a walking safari of whatever length you are looking for, and at a date to suit you. We can not guarantee that you will be walking alone with just a guide, as other guests could be at any bush camp at the same time as you, in which case you could be walking together. However the camps have a maximum capacity of 8 or 10 guests so walking groups will always be small.

Is it for you?

Walking safaris are accompanied by an experienced naturalist and an armed game scout. The walking is not very difficult, but the terrain is obviously uneven and unpredictable. Walks usually last 3-4 hours.

Best time

The dry season in Zambia's South Luangwa is from May to October is when wildlife begins to congregate at the dwindling water sources, offering good viewing opportunities. October is the hottest month, with temperatures sometimes reaching 40°C or more.

Getting there

There are several direct flights each week from Europe to Lusaka. It is about a 10 hr flight. There are also daily flights to Johannesburg (South Africa). We can arrange the internationals from the UK and all connecting flights. Return flights to Lusaka from the UK start from about £500.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

  • Open Panel

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:
