A luxury walking trails camp inside South Luangwa National Park. This new walking trails camp opened in June 2011 and offers authentic walking safaris, such as those enjoyed in the days of the explorers! Enjoy the sights and smells of the bush as you stand in elephant footprints or watch safari ants cross the ground in front of you, dine on the floodplains with the noises of the night surrounding you, lit by oil lamps and retreat to the comfort of your luxury tented room at the end of the evening.
Guided by Garth Hovell, with twenty years guiding experience, you will walk through the Luangwa Valley enjoying an up close and personal safari experience. There is a great concentration of wildlife if this area and many zebra, puku and buffalo gather on the plains. Endemic species to Luangwa include Crayshaw's Zebra and Thornicrofts Giraffe. The rivers are full of hippo and crocodiles and there are many elephant in the valley, plus over 400 species of birds. Predators here include lion, leopard and wild dogs.
Sanctuary Zebra Plains Camp is located on a sandbank where the Luangwa and Chibembe Rivers meet in South Luangwa National Park. Access is from nearby Mfuwe Airport. We recommend you spend some time at either Chichele Lodge or Puku Ridge prior to the walking safari (or another location in Luangwa) and to avoid disruption to guests at Zebra Plains and keep groups small arrivals into the camp are either Monday or Thursday for three nights.
There are just four tents (two twin and two double) and the camp accommodates a maximum of six guests at a time to allow for personal service. Each tent has full size comfy beds with mosquito nets, a luggage rack and en-suite facilities. There is running water in the wash basin, hot water is provided on request and there is a flush toilet. Water for al fresco showers is heated to required temperature by camp staff.
The main area has a library, bar and dining space. Power is provided by solar and battery inverter and the tents have solar rechargeable lighting. Lanterns light up the pathways. Camera batteries can be charged in the main area.
Zebra Plains Camp has been named as one of the Top New Hotels of 2011 by Conde Nast.
