Luangwa River Camp (formerly Luangwa River Lodge) in South Luangwa National Park consists of just five chalets thus catering for no more than 10 guests at any one time. The chalets are individually named; Mwala, Mazi, Merzi, Moto and Ziko and all feature unique decorative themes. Each chalet has an en-suite bathroom and a private deck with views over the park and river.

The open plan lounge, dining area and revitalising pool afford excellent game viewing opportunities and delicious dining under an endless canopy of African stars.

Luangwa River Camp offers a range of activities, including guided walking safaris, which originated in the area, driving and riverboat safari trips (depending on the water level of the Luangwa River). The camp also offers excursions to local schools and villages.

When the river levels are high, a boat is used from outside the lodge to access the vehicles on the other side, inside the national park (or you can be driven around the river over the main gate bridge). Boat trips up and down stream can be taken when the river is at high water.

In 2011 the camp was taken over by Robin Pope Safaris, who renamed it Luangwa River Camp.

It is located about 20 minutes north of the main Mfuwe gate entrance to the park and is in a great area to explore in all directions both the game management area and inside the park. Big cats are frequently seen around the lodge including leopard and large prides of lion.

Situation

On the banks of the Luangwa River, South Luangwa National Park, Zambia. The park is on the opposit bank to the lodge (short boat crossing).

Activities

Game drives (day and night), guided walks, river safaris and boat trips (April subject to water levels). Cultural trips to villages and craft workshops.

Facilities

5 en-suite chalets, each with private deck overlooking the river and park. Spacious indoor sitting and dining area. Outdoor viewing deck and small swimming pool.

Child policy

Normally no children accepted due to the small size of the lodge. If a family or private group wishes to take the whole lodge, children can be accepted on request.

1 April - 30 November. Closed for 9 May till 16 June 2011.

Best time

Any time is great but dry season is June - October.

Accommodation, all meals, laundry service, park fees, luangwa conservation levy, game drives and walks, most drinks, airport transfers to and from Mfuwe.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

I stayed here at the end of the green season. It was still lush and the river was still high.
The first thing you notice on arrival by boat is the striking architecture and styishness of the place. The big main building is open, with high-roofed thatch. It's much less rustic-feeling than many other South Luangwa lodges. The rooms are private, large and well-equipped, and you feel like you're in your own little cottage (which you are really!).

This is a superb luxury lodge - something quite unique in Luangwa as it feels as though it would be more at home with the 'boutique' styles of Botswana camps! However, the location in the central area but a quiet spot, is great as you can go on game drives in many directions, and even sleep out under the stars. They have a fabulous value for money special offer and the hosting is superb. It's a perfect honeymoon option!
