About Kasaka River Lodge

  • Close Panel

Kasaka River Lodge, near Lower Zambezi National Park, offers an authentic bush experience and combines excellent land and river activities in the wilderness. The camp is located on private property, on the banks of the Zambezi River in the Chiawa Game Management Area and is only 4 km by road from the Lower Zambezi National Park. Royal airstrip is only a 5-10 minute drive. The name Kasaka translates to where the lions meet.

The lodge is located on the banks of the Zambezi River in the unspoilt Lower Zambezi Valley of south-eastern Zambia. It consists of 8 comfortable tents and open-air public areas that are secluded in the native flora and optimize the gorgeous river views. The camp has a centrally located bar and lounge area on a deck above the river and the accommodation is split into two sides, each of the large en-suite tents has a private viewing patio, tastefully decorated with authentic African flavours. The honeymoon tent has an open-air bath overlooking the Zambezi River.

Guests have the option to either stay on the 'Tame' side with its cool landscaped gardens or the 'Wild' side where the bush grows naturally. The latter is reached by raised walkways to allow for the passage of wildlife within the camp. The Tame side tents are set on open lawns with the swimming pool nearby overlooking the river. There is also the hippo pod a stylish house with two huge bedrooms and bathrooms, a central lounge and large deck area - this is perfect for families.

The tents are 16 sq metre and raised on a solid slasto stone plinth, with private river view patio and comfortable seating, they have an insect-proofed sleeping area with twin, teak beds, lounge area with seating and table, teak, rosewood and mahogany crafted furnishings, en-suite bathroom with an indoor shower, basin and flushing toilet, hot water is provided in the mornings and evening with wood-fired boilers, full range of guest amenities, bathrobe & slippers, bush laundry service, 24 hour lighting in both the tent and bathroom. Insect spray and torches are provided. The camp has a fully silenced generator runs for 5 hours each evening.

The Zambezi River extends the length of the property and affords close sightings of buffalo, elephant, hippo and crocodile. Wilderness activities include game drives and game walks, river-based game viewing, canoeing, fishing, birding and painting safaris with renowned wildlife artist Rory McDougall.

Kasaka has a friendly atmosphere and great staff - it is especially good for families with a childrens programme of activities. If guests would like to see some Zambian culture during their stay, Kasaka supports a local village (about 30 mins by boat) by a charity set up by Kasaka's owner. Here guests can sample village life, see the school and there are also tours available to the Conservation Lower Zambezi centre (near to the camp) where they have a media centre and anti poaching patrol.

Pricing guidelines for Zambia

We hope the following will give you a rough idea of costs. These are quoted per person based on twin share for two people, without international flights but including internal flights. We’ve used good standard accommodation throughout. There are nearly always ways to spend more money than we’ve suggested (!), but these prices show a good and realistic range for each type of trip.

International flights will add from about £600 to £800 depending on the season and route (unless airlines have special offers). Zambia combines well with Malawi and Botswana.

For each accommodation on this website you will find an indication of the price. The bands are based on the price per person per night at peak season and are represented by the following values for this country:

  £50 to £150

Set higher than most lodges on the banks of the Zambezi the views from Kasaka are wonderful. I inspected this lodge before it was open for the season so I can’t comment on the detail of the rooms, but I met the managers (Yvonne and Mweka) and some of the staff, all of whom are obviously keen to make a stay here a very special experience for guests.

I loved Kasaka - a very friendly feeling to the place.  It's nice to have two completely different parts to it, this means guests can choose if they want to be on the river front or in the trees closer to the sounds of the bush!  I'd recommend this to anyone who wants good value and access to different activities, especially for visiting local villages and projects as Kasaka is right on the edge of all of this.
